Three Cougars Ready for US Amateur Championship

Austyn Reily, Jacob Borow and signee Santiago De La Fuente tee off at nation’s premier amateur event
PARAMUS, N.J. – University of Houston Men's Golfers Austyn Reily, Jacob Borow and signee Santiago De La Fuente tee off at the U.S. Amateur Championships beginning Monday morning.
More than 300 of the world's top amateur players will compete in 36 holes of stroke play with 18 holes each day on Monday and Tuesday at The Ridgewood Country Club and Arcola Country Club. From there, the Top 64 advance to match play beginning Wednesday.
This marks the fourth straight season and the ninth time in the last 10 years in which at least one Cougar will compete at the U.S. Amateur Championship. A year ago, Andres Aranguren competed in stroke play at Oakmont Country Club and Longue Vue Club in Pennsylvania.
This is the most Cougars to compete at the U.S. Amateur Championship in a single year since All-Americans Roman Robledo and Blair Hamilton and Matt Dunn teed off at the 2015 Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill.

Monday – Reily begins his First Round at 6 a.m. (CDT) off No. 9 at The Ridgewood Country. He will compete in a group with Dougie Ergood Jr. and Justin Biwer
De La Fuente tees off at 11:57 a.m. (CDT) off No. 10 at Arcola Country and will compete with Kelly Chinn and Jake Bettencourt.
Borow starts his U.S. Amateur Championship at 12:59 p.m. (CDT) off No. 1 at The Ridgewood Country Club. He will play with Robbie Ziegler and Jerry Gunthorpe.
Tuesday – The Cougars will compete with the same players in their group for the Second Round.
De La Fuente begins at 7:02 .a.m. (CDT) off No. 1 at The Ridgewood Country Club, while Borow tees off No. 10 at Arcola Country Club at 7:24 a.m. (CDT). Reily begins play at 11:15 a.m. (CDT) off No. 1 at The Ridgewood Country Club.

ABOUT AUSTYN REILY
To clinch his first appearance at the U.S. Amateur Championship, Reily posted a score of 144 and defeated David Harrison in a playoff for the lone spot out of Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande, P.R. The Pottsboro native posted an even-par 72 in each round.
Reily opened the qualifier's First Round with birdies on two of his first five holes and finished with 12 straight pars. He also drained a pair of birdies in the Final Round to force the playoff.
A two-year letterman, Reily posted a 73.85 average with 11 rounds of par or better in 2021-22 on the way to being named to the All-American Athletic Conference Team for the first time.
Reily opened with a 69-67 and tied for fifth with a score of 7-under 209 at Southern Hills Plantation Club in late April during his debut at the American Athletic Conference Championships.
The Pottsboro, Texas, native also tied for eighth after posting back-to-back 72s at the Cougars' own All-American Intercollegiate at Golf Club of Houston in March.

ABOUT JACOB BOROW
After opening his one-day qualifier with an even-par 72 at Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland, Texas, Borow posted a 4-under 68 in the afternoon session to punch his first ticket to the U.S. Amateur Championship.
In the First Round, Borow made birdie on two of his first five holes and overcame his first bogey of the day on No. 11 with his third birdie on Nov. 14.
In the afternoon, the Lake Jackson, Texas, native birdied three of his first seven holes and added one more birdie on his second nine in a bogey-free round. He defeated Andre Jacobs in a playoff to clinch the second and final spot out of the qualifier.
In 2021-22, Borow posted a 74.52 average with 12 rounds of par or better, including a career-best 68 in the Final Rounds of the Houston Classic and the prestigious Valspar Collegiate Invitational.
He became the Cougars' first Freshman of the Year in the American Athletic Conference and the first to capture the top freshman honor in any conference since Brad McIntosh received the 2001 Conference USA accolade.

ABOUT SANTIAGO De La FUENTE
De La Fuente earned his place at the U.S. Amateur Championship after shooting 4-under 140 in a 36-hole qualifier at Campestre De La Ciudad De Mexico.
After shooting a 73 in the First Round, De La Fuente drained six birdies with only one bogey in the afternoon session on the way to a 67 to earn one of two spots from the qualifier.
De La Fuente recently signed a scholarship agreement after competing for his first two seasons at Arkansas Tech. He will compete as a junior beginning in 2022-23 with two years of eligibility remaining.
In two years at Arkansas Tech, De La Fuente competed in 22 tournaments and compiled 17 Top-20 finishes with a tournament individual championship in each year. He led the Wonder Boys to the NCAA Division II Championships each season with the NCAA national title as a freshman in 2021.
As a sophomore in 2021-22, De La Fuente compiled a 73.03 scoring average with nine Top-20 showings in 12 tournaments. He was named to the All-Central Region Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America and was a unanimous selection on the Great American Conference First Team.
He opened the season with three straight Top-Five finishes and captured medalist honors at the Houston Classic at Golf Club of Houston, thanks to a 65 in the Second Round.
As a freshman in 2020-21, De La Fuente helped lead Arkansas Tech to the NCAA Division II national championship after recording a 73.25 average with eight Top-20 finishes in 10 tournaments. The Mexico City, Mexico, native opened that season with five straight Top-20 finishes and earned the first title of his collegiate career with a score of 6-under 210 at the Battle for the Belt.
