Sears, Clayton, Deese selected in the 2022 Draft
HOUSTON – A trio of Houston pitchers were selected during the final day of the 2022 Major League Baseball draft on Tuesday.

Junior right-handed pitcher Ben Sears was the first Cougar taken in the draft by the Kansas City Royals in the 14th round with the 415 pick. A native of Riverside, R.I., Sears tossed 66.2 innings as Houston's closer with a 3.10 ERA in 20222. He was an American Athletic Conference All-Conference honoree and was tops in the conference with 12 saves.

Fellow righty Logan Clayton was the next Cougar to hear his name called during the MLB Draft. Clayton was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 17th round with the 498th selection. The pitcher finished the 2022 with a 7-4 record across 27 appearances.Â

Cougar starting pitcher Jaycob Deese rounded out the trio being drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 17th round with the 500th pick. Deese, a 2022 Golden Glove Finalist, finished the season with a 5-3 record over 17 appearances and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. He led the team in innings pitched with 85.0 including throwing a 9.0 inning complete game.
Houston's three total pitchers selected matched USF for the most in the American Athletic Conference.
