The 2021 100-meter NCAA runner up, Shaun Maswanganyi has also collected three entries including the men's 100-meter, 200-meter and 4x100-meter relay. Last season, Maswanganyi finished second in the 100-meter with a time of 10.09 and third in the 200-meter with a personal-best 20.10. The sophomore will also anchor the men's 4x100-meter relay. Houston currently holds six individual national titles in the men's 100-meter most recently by the late Cameron Burrell in 2018. Head coach Leroy Burrell and assistant coach Carl Lewis also won the event in 1990 and 1981, respectively, both with sub-10 second times.
In his first trip to the NCAA Championships, Edward Sumler IV joins Maswanganyi in the men's 100-meter, 200-meter and 4x100-meter relay. This season Sumler clocked a wind-aided 10.04 to capture the American Athletic Conference title in the 100-meter before running wind-legal personal-best 10.08 at the NCAA West Regional. Also a member of the 4x100-meter relay team, the junior will run the third leg of the relay.
De'Vion Wilson will also make his NCAA Championship debut this week in Oregon. The American Champion in the men's 110-meter hurdles, Wilson clocked a 13.53 to qualify for nationals.
Women's hurdler, Naomi Taylor will also compete in the short hurdles after qualifying at regionals. This will be Taylor's third-straight appearance at nationals after running the women's 4x100-meter relay last season. Taylor is a three-time NCAA Outdoor All-American and will compete this year solely in the 100-meter hurdles.
Pole Vaulter Antonio Ruiz will conclude his collegiate career with his third appearance at the NCAA Championships. He is currently tied for the school record at 5.55-meters which he tabbed this season. At regionals, Ruiz cleared a 5.39-meter height to secure a spot at nationals.
Jordan Booker and Dylan Brown round out in the men's 4x100-meter relay team. The Cougars hold the second fastest seed time in the event and are looking to comeback after dropping the baton last year in finals. Houston has won the national title in the men's 4x100-meter relay three times including back-to-back years in 2017 and 2018.
Booker will also compete in the 4x400-meter relay and will be joined by Tyrell Valentine and Trey Johnson as well as Jordan who will anchor the team. Adam Mason and DJ Akindele will serve as alternates for the relay teams. The last time the Cougars competed in the 4x400-meter relay at nationals was in 2019 when the team finished third overall.
