Win Streak Extended

WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Houston scored four runs in the sixth inning, overcoming a once three-run deficit to run its American Athletic Conference win streak to six games with a 7-4 victory at Wichita State on Friday night from Eck Stadium.

The Cougars, who could do little against Wichita State sophomore starter Jace Kaminska (2-7) over the first five innings, taxed the right-hander in the sixth highlighted by a go-ahead three-run double down the right field line from freshman Malachi Lott (1 for 3).

Houston (31-15, 11-5 American) added insurance in the eighth as senior Ryan Hernandez (1 for 4) swatted a two-run home run over the wall in left center. The long ball was the first baseman's seventh of the season and provided an answer after the Shockers (15-31, 4-12 American) trimmed their deficit to one in the sixth.

Cougar starter Jaycob Deese (5-2) allowed just four runs despite surrendering nine hits across 7.0 innings. The right-hander used the double-play ball in consecutive innings during the sixth and seventh and tossed 5.0-plus innings for the ninth time in 10 starts.

Kaminska permitted five runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings while being saddled with his fifth consecutive loss. Cougar closer Ben Sears locked up his 10th save behind 2.0 scoreless frames.

With the win, the Cougars notched their 17th comeback victory including seventh involving multiple runs. The Shockers staked claim to a 3-0 advantage after two innings before Houston scored seven of the game's final eight runs.

UP NEXT
The teams return for the middle game at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Cougars will send junior southpaw Kyle LaCalameto (2-1, 3.26 ERA) to the mound against Wichita State right-handed sophomore Cameron Bye (4-1, 2.03 ERA). The contest can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on The Varsity Network app.
