Postseason events begins May 16 at The Reserve at Spanos Park
HOUSTON – For the second straight season, the University of Houston Men's Golf program will compete in the NCAA postseason when it tees off at the NCAA Stockton Regional.
The Cougars will compete as the No. 10 seed at The Reserve at Spanos Park on May 16-18 for Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke and Assistant Coach Houston Moore.
There, Houston will face No. 1 seed Arizona State, No. 2 seed Washington, No. 3 seed Stanford, No. 4 seed LSU, No. 5 seed Oregon, No. 6 seed Nevada, No. 7 seed Liberty, No. 8 seed BYU, No. 9 seed UAB, No. 11 seed UC Davis, No. 12 seed Denver, No. 13 seed Abilene Christian and No. 14 seed Weber State.
Six NCAA Regionals will be played across the nation. In addition to Stockton, Calif., those venues include Traditions Club (Bryan, Texas; hosted by Texas A&M); Champion Course – PGA National Resort (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; hosted by Florida Atlantic); The Course at Yale (New Haven, Conn.; hosted by Yale); Jimmie Austin Golf Club (Norman, Okla.; hosted by Oklahoma) and OSU Golf Club (Columbus, Ohio; hosted by Ohio State).
The top five teams and low individual not on an advancing team advance to compete at the NCAA Championships, set for May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
This will be the first time the Cougars have competed in California since the 2017 Stanford Regional.
ABOUT the COUGARS
In 2021-22, the Cougars overcame a slow start in the fall to play some of their best golf heading into the postseason.
The Cougars have earned four Top-Five team finishes in the last five tournaments on their spring schedule. That includes a second-place finish at their own rain-shortened All-American Intercollegiate at Golf Club of Houston in March with a third-place showing at the American Athletic Conference Championships at Southern Hills Plantation Club in April.
Senior and two-time All-Conference performer Alexander Frances leads the Cougars with a 72.18 scoring average, 15 rounds of par or better, nine rounds in the 60s and five Top-10 finishes this season.
Fellow senior and All-Conference performer Braxton Watkins stands second on the team with a 72.76 average and is tied with junior and two-time All-Conference star Marcus Wochner for second with 14 rounds of par or better.
Frances, Watkins and Wochner were named to the All-American Athletic Conference Team earlier this week and were joined on that postseason squad by junior Austyn Reily. Redshirt freshman Jacob Borow was named the league's Freshman of the Year.
Frances was a unanimous selection in voting by the league's head coaches and joined Wochner in receiving the postseason honor for the second straight season. Watkins, Reily and Borow collected the first postseason awards of their collegiate careers.
NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY
This will be Houston's 22nd team appearance in NCAA Regional play during the program's rich history. It also is the eighth during Dismuke's tenure.
A year ago, the Cougars finished ninth at the NCAA Kingston Springs Regional at Golf Club of Tennessee. Frances opened that tournament with a 69 and tied with Matt Cole for the team lead at 215.
In its history, Houston has recorded nine Top-Five team finishes in NCAA Regional play with four student-athletes capturing individual titles (Michael Perras, 2016 NCAA Franklin Regional; Blair Hamilton, 2015 NCAA Lubbock Regional; Brett Callas, 2003 NCAA Central and Dean Larsson, 1994 NCAA Central).
