Houston falls 3-2 in 10 innings at No. 21 East Carolina
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The University of Houston saw its late lead slip away as No. 21 East Carolina walked off the Cougars in the 10th inning for a 3-2 victory in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon from Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Â
With the loss, Houston (34-22, 13-11 American) turns its focus to Tuesday's TicketSmarter American Athletic Conference Baseball Championship where it will compete as the No. 3 seed and face No. 6-seed Wichita State. The victory was East Carolina's (38-18, 20-4 American) 14th straight, the nation's longest active win streak. The Pirates will be the top seed in the tournament.
Â
After a one-out double from junior Lane Hoover in the 10th inning, senior Bryson Worrell drove in the game-winner with an RBI-single. Houston redshirt junior Maddux Miller (3-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing one run on two hits in 0.1 innings.
Â
Houston's bottom four batters in the order contributed six hits highlighted by sophomore eight-hole hitter Samuel Benjamin who drove in a pair of runs. Six Cougar pitchers combined to limit the Pirates to 4 for 17 (.235) with runners and 1 for 9 (.111) with two outs.
Â
Houston maintained a 2-1 lead through four straight innings before East Carolina used consecutive one-out doubles to the tie the game at two-all in the eighth. Freshman Jacob Jenkins-Cowart laced a run-scoring two-bagger into left field, plating Worrell.
Â
Houston used three hits, including a two-out, two-run single from Benjamin to take a 2-0 lead in the second inning. The multi-RBI performance was the second on the season for Benjamin and first since March 29 against Prairie View.
Â
The Pirates had their opportunities earlier, stranding two runners in the first and third innings. Cougar freshman starter Malachi Lott allowed one run on one hit with two walks and a strikeout in two innings. At the plate, he added a hit and run.
