Pitching holds steady but Houston falls to No. 21 Pirates
Â
With the loss, Houston (34-21, 13-10 American) enters next week's TicketSmarter American Athletic Conference Baseball Championship as the No. 3 seed. The Cougars will face the No. 6 seed Tuesday night with the game time set for 47 minutes following the 3 p.m. CT Game 3.
Â
The victory was East Carolina's (37-18, 19-4 American) 13th consecutive. The Pirates jumped ahead 4-0, putting up a pair of runs in each of the first two frames including solo home runs from sophomore Zach Agnos and senior Bryson Worrell in the first inning.
Â
ECU sophomore starter Josh Grosz retired 10 consecutive batters before the Cougars awoke in the fifth inning. Redshirt sophomore Anthony Tulimero delivered a leadoff single and Ryan Hernandez clubbed a two-run home run to trim Houston's deficit to 4-2. The long ball was the first baseman's 12th of the season and sixth in the last 10 games.
Â
Houston took advantage of an ECU throwing error in the sixth as sophomore Samuel Tormos reached to lead off the frame. Two batters later redshirt sophomore Zach Arnold (2 for 4) lined an RBI-single into center. The multi-hit performance was Arnold's team-best 20th of the season.
Â
Cougar junior starter Kyle LaCalameto (2-3) drew the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in 1.2 innings. Houston junior reliever Nathan Medrano worked around two walks and a hit to toss 2.0 scoreless frames. Junior Cameron Prayer added 1.2 scoreless.
Â
Houston pitching held the Pirates to .188 (3 for 16) with runners aboard but the Cougars collected just five hits offensively. Tulimero (2 for 4), who has a hit in eight of his last nine contests, notched his 18th multi-hit performance.
