Men’s Golf Earns Five All-Conference Honors

Jacob Borow named league’s Freshman of the Year; Alexander Frances, Braxton Watkins, Marcus Wochner & Austyn Reily named to All-Conference Team
HOUSTON – University of Houston golfer Jacob Borow was named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, while four Cougars were named to the All-American Athletic Conference Team on Tuesday afternoon.
Seniors Alexander Frances and Braxton Watkins and juniors Marcus Wochner and Austyn Reily were named to the All-Conference Team in voting by the league's head coaches.
Under the leadership of Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke, the Cougars' four All-Conference honors led all schools, doubling the total from UCF, Cincinnati, South Florida and SMU.
It was the program's most All-Conference honors as a member of the American Athletic Conference and the most in any league since the 2000 team enjoyed five members on the All-Conference USA Team with James Edmondson, Chris Morris, Wade Ormsby, Andy Sanders and B.J. Staten.
ABOUT JACOB BOROW
Borow is in his first season of competition with the Cougars after sitting out a year ago as a redshirt.
In 2021-22, he has posted a 74.53 average with 10 rounds of par or better, including a career-best 68 in the Final Round of the Houston Classic and the prestigious Valspar Collegiate Invitational.
Borow became the Cougars' first Freshman of the Year in the American Athletic Conference and the first to capture the top freshman honor in any conference since Brad McIntosh received the 2001 Conference USA accolade.
This was the first American postseason honor for Borow in his career. He was a member of the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team a year ago.
ABOUT ALEXANDER FRANCES
A five-year letterman, Frances has been the Cougars' leading performer throughout the 2021-22 season.
He led the program with a 72.18 scoring average and 15 rounds of par or better, including nine in the 60s.
The Stege, Denmark, native led the Cougars with three Top-Five finishes and Top-10 showings.
He fired three straight sub-par rounds in the first team tournament of the spring to finish at 7-under 209 and capture the individual title at the Border Olympics on the first hole of a playoff against teammate Andrew Gibson.
It was the first individual championship of his collegiate career.
Frances added a third-place showing at the Cabo Collegiate Invitational in March and tied for 10th at the Aggie Invitational in April.
Frances was named to the All-American Athletic Conference Team for the second straight season. In addition, he is a four-time member of the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team.
He continues to rise higher in the Cougars' career records book, standing 12th in school history with 9,900 strokes and ninth with 136 rounds played.
He was one of eight unanimous selections for the team, joining Teddy Tetak and Johnny Travale (UCF), Sam Jean (Cincinnati), Tyran Snyders (Memphis), Albin Bergstrom (South Florida) and Noah Goodwin and Nathan Petronzio (SMU).
ABOUT MARCUS WOCHNER
Competing in his first season with the Cougars, Wochner has posted a 72.97 scoring average and is tied with Watkins for second among the Cougars with 14 rounds of par or better.
The Holte, Denmark, native overcame a slow start to his season to play some of his best golf toward the end of the year. He has posted six Top-25 finishes in his last eight tournaments.
In his most recent outing, Wochner fired three straight rounds of par or better, including a Second-Round 66, to tie for second at The American Championships at 11-under 205 at Southern Hill Plantation Club in late April.
It was the second straight season he finished as the runner-up at the league's postseason tournament but his first time with the Cougars. Wochner posted a total of 8-under 208 to finish second with Wichita State a year ago.
Wochner also tied for 11th at the rain-shortened All-American Intercollegiate and finished 13th at the Louisiana Classic after opening the first two rounds of that tournament at 69-70.
He set the Cougars' low round of the season with a 65 in the Final Round of the Cabo Collegiate Invitational on March 1.
Like Frances, Wochner was named to the All-American Athletic Conference Team for the second straight season.
ABOUT AUSTYN REILY
A two-year letterman, Reily has posted a 74.03 average with 10 rounds of par or better this season.
In his most recent action, Reily opened with a 69-67 and tied for fifth with a score of 7-under 209 at Southern Hills Plantation Club in late April during his debut at the league's annual postseason tournament.
The Pottsboro, Texas, native also tied for eighth after posting back-to-back 72s at the Cougars' own All-American Intercollegiate at Golf Club of Houston in March.
This was the first American postseason honor for Reily in his career. He was a member of the 2019-20 American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team.
ABOUT BRAXTON WATKINS
Watkins is tied for second on the team with a 72.76 average and is tied with Wochner for second with 14 rounds of par or better.
The Winthrop, Ark., native has earned two Top-Five finishes in 2021-22, including a season-best fifth-place showing at the Cougars' own All-American Intercollegiate at Golf Club of Houston in March.
Watkins earned a sixth-place finish at the Border Olympics in February, lowering his score with each round for a total of even-par 216 at Laredo Country Club.
This was the first American postseason honor for Watkins in his career.
South Florida's Albin Bergstrom was named The American Player of the Year, while SMU's Chris Parra was recognized as the Coach of the Year.
The Cougars were joined on their All-Conference Team by Tetak and Travale (UCF), Jean and Joey McCarthy (Cincinnati), Snyders (Memphis), Bergstrom and Run Youprayong (South Florida) and Goodwin and Petronzio (SMU).

Six NCAA Regionals will be played May 16-18 at one of six sites across the nation. Those venues include Traditions Club (Bryan, Texas; hosted by Texas A&M); Champion Course – PGA National Resort (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; hosted by Florida Atlantic); The Course at Yale (New Haven, Conn.; hosted by Yale); The Reserve at Spanos Park (Stockton, Calif.; hosted by Pacific); Jimmie Austin Golf Club (Norman, Okla.; hosted by Oklahoma) and OSU Golf Club (Columbus, Ohio; hosted by Ohio State).
The top five teams and low individual not on an advancing team will advance to compete at the NCAA Championships, set for May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
