Tuilefano, Howe Place on Second Day of American Championships

Seventeen qualify for finals on Sunday
WICHITA, Kan. – Nu'uausala Tuilefano and Sarah Howe claimed podium finishes on the second day of the American Athletic Conference Championship at Cessna Stadium.Â
Tuilefano broke the stadium record in the women's shot put with a 16.81-meter toss. Her final throw of the day ultimately landed her a second-place finish in the competition. Women's pole vaulter Sarah Howe followed it up with a third-place medal clearing a 3.97-meter jump.Â
DJ Akindele was the fastest to the line in the second heat of the men's 100-meter hurdles prelims, crossing in 13.65 in the wind to claim the top qualification spot and a personal best. Reigning indoor champion De'Vion Wilson won the opening heat with a time of 13.72 to snag the other automatic qualifying spot as Quivell Jordan-Bacot advanced based on his 13.87 time.Â
In the men's 800-meter, Christan Gilmore and Jeremiah Wilson recorded automatic qualifying times for finals while Adam Mason advanced based on his time in the prelims.Â
Iman Babineaux and Zarie Dumas finished the women's 400-meter with qualifying times to compete on Sunday. Trey Johnson led the way in the prelims of the men's 400-meter, crossing the line in 46.42 in heat one. Tyrell Valentine and Joshua White also posted qualifying times to advance to finals.Â
The women's 100-meter was highlighted by Cecilia Tamayo-Garza who outraced the opening section with an automatic bid time of 11.44. Camille Rutherford posted an 11.52 to qualify for finals as well.Â
Edward Sumler IV outpaced the entire field posting a 10.15 personal best in the men's 100-meter prelims. Defending champion and teammate Shaun Maswanganyi threw down a 10.30 for an auto spot while Dylan Brown and Jordan Booker also qualified for finals.Â
