
Track and Field Takes Second at American Championships

Sumler IV, Maswanganyi highlight Houston's Sunday performances
WICHITA, Kan. – The Houston men's and women's track and field teams both took second in the American Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday night.
The men's team finished with 179 points, behind Wichita State's 185.50. On the women's side, the Cougars finished with 105.50 points behind UCF with 163, and narrowly outscored Cincinnati who finished with 105 points. Following the meet, sophomore Shaun Maswanganyi was named Most Valuable Performer.
The highlight of the meet came as Edward Sumler IV clocked at 10.04 in the men's 100-meter to claim first place with a new personal best after running a 10.15 in prelims. He narrowly beat teammate Maswanganyi by 0.01 as the South African native recorded a 10.05 for second place. The two teammates now rank No. 11 and 13 in the nation, respectively.
Houston's first win of the day came in the men's 4x100-meter relay as a team of Marcus Wright, Dylan Brown, Sumler IV and Trenton McDonald finished with a 39.74.
Indoor triple jump champion, Jadon Brome added another win for the Cougars with a 15.66-meter mark in the outdoor triple jump giving Houston 10 points. Quinton Stringfellow set a personal best and snagged third in the event at 15.61-meters.
In the hurdles, Destiny Smith posted a personal best 13.07 in the women's 100-meter hurdles for second place and Naomi Taylor clocked a 13.27 for third. In the women's 200-meter, Cecilia Tamayo-Garza contributed a second place finish with a time of 23.05.
The Houston men swept the podium in the 110-meter hurdles as De'Vion Wilson broke the American Conference record with a 13.50 for first place. DJ Akindele grabbed second with a 13.52 and Quivell Jordan-Bacot ran a 13.66 for third.
Christian Gilmore took the top spot in the men's 800 with a 1:51.65, a full second ahead the rest of the field.
Jordan-Bacot then defended his title in the men's 400-meter hurdles soaring to a 49.89 time for his second consecutive title and Houston's third in the event.
Maswanganyi and Sumler IV closed out the meet for the Cougars with the top two spots in the men's 200-meter. Maswanganyi easily finished with a conference and stadium record at 20.29 while Sumler IV clocked a 20.40, his third podium finish of the day.
UP NEXT
Houston now turns its attention to the NCAA Regional Meet in Little Rock, Arkansas. The top 48 athletes in each event in the western regional will compete for a spot at the NCAA Championships.
