Cougars overcome early deficit to take opener against UCF
Hernandez smacked his second home run of the game and fifth in the last five contests to put Houston (34-16, 13-6 American) ahead 5-4 with a three-run shot in the fourth inning. The first baseman, who will be among three seniors honored Sunday, clubbed a two-run homer in the second inning.
UCF (28-21, 11-8 American) jumped ahead with a four-run first inning, but junior Cougar starter Jaycob Deese bounced back to put up zeroes over the next three innings. The right-hander allowed five runs with four of his seven hits permitted coming in the first inning.
Houston junior closer Ben Sears locked up his American-best 12th save, allowing just a solo home run in the ninth. Sears fanned two in 2.0 innings as part of a Cougar bullpen that held the Knights to three hits over the last 5.0 innings.
Making his 15th appearance of the season, Garcia smacked his first home run with the Cougars, clubbing a three-run long ball for insurance in the ninth inning. Offensively, the Cougars extended their season-long streak of double-digit hit games to eight straight.
Houston junior reliever Logan Clayton (6-3) stranded the bases loaded in the sixth inning, working around a pair of hit by pitches and a single as part of 2.2 scoreless frames. Redshirt sophomore catcher Anthony Tulimero threw out two runners in the first three innings, running his league-best season total to 22.
UCF starter Ben Vespi (5-3) allowed eight hits and six runs in 6.0 innings. The Knights collected 10 hits and were led offensively by Tom Josten (2 for 3) and Andrew Sundean (1 for 5) who each logged two RBIs.
