Essex, England native will compete as COVID-senior after transferring from Wofford
HOUSTON – Becca Earl has joined the University of Houston Women's Golf program after recently signing a scholarship agreement, Carolyn Macow Leatherwood Head Coach Lydia Gumm announced Thursday.
Earl, who is a native of Essex, England, will compete as a COVID-senior beginning in 2022-23 with one year of eligibility remaining. She joined the Cougars after competing for her first four collegiate seasons at Wofford.
Earl led the Terriers in scoring average for four consecutive seasons and finished her career there as the program's leader in scoring average (74.56), Top-Five finishes (12) and Top-10 finishes (16) and tied the school record with three tournament individual championships.
Earlier this week, she was honored as Wofford Athletics Female Most Valuable Player of the Year at the Department's Bosscars awards.
In addition to her work on the course, she was an award-winning student in the classroom and will graduate later this month with a bachelor's degree in psychology with minors in sociology and anthropology.
Earl was a two-time recipient of the Southern Conference Commissioner's Medal with a 3.8 cumulative grade-point average or higher and was named to the Academic All-Southern Conference Team three times.
"We are excited to add Becca to our team," said Carolyn Macow Leatherwood Head Coach Gumm, who recently completed her first season leading the Cougars. "She has a strong resume and has played well all year. She will be a great addition to our program."
As a senior at Wofford in 2021-22, Earl led the Terriers with a 73.81 scoring average posted the team's low round of the season with a 67 in the Second Round of the Southern Conference Championships in April. She enjoyed seven Top-20 finishes, including six consecutive Top-10 showings in her final tournaments of the season and was named to All-Southern Conference Team.
After tying for third at the French Broad Collegiate, Earl earned medalist honors at the Lady Bison Bay Point Classic, thanks to a 71 in the Final Round. She finished seventh at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate with a score of 219 and finished capped her Wofford career as runner-up at the Southern Conference Championships.
Earl led the team as a junior in 2020-21 with a 76.59 average and finished eighth at the Amelia Island Collegiate.
She led the Terriers with a 72.95 average as a sophomore in 2019-20 due to a sizzling start, which saw her posted second-place finishes at the William & Mary Fall Invitational and Elon Invitational before capturing the individual championship at the Winthrop Fall Invitational with a score of 3-under 141.
As a freshman in 2018-19, Earl topped the team with a 75.36 average and six Top-10 finishes. She earned medalist honors at the Terrier Intercollegiate with a score of even-par 144 and added second-place showings at the Battle at Boulder Creek and Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate. For her impressive performances, she was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year.
Following her collegiate playing season, she won the English Women's Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Ipwsich (Purdis Heath) Golf Club in August 2019.
