Cougars conclude regular season action with loss against crosstown rival
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Tennis program battled hard, but fell 4-0 to No. 55 Rice in the regular season finale from the George R. Brown Tennis Center in Houston on Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars (13-9) now look towards a shot at earning the 2022 American Athletic Conference Championship title with the event held April 20-23 in Tulsa, Okla., at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

With the win, Rice (13-6) improved to 3-1 on the season against The American.

DOUBLES
On Court 1, Azul Pedemonti and Blanca Cortijo Parreno fell to No. 24 pair Maria Budin and Diae El Jardi, 6-0. On Court 2, Houston's Sophie Gerits and Laura Slisane put up a battle against Anastasia Smirnova and Allison Zipoli, ultimately falling, 6-4.Â
Freshmen pair Maria Dzemeshkevich and Elena Trencheva fought hard on Court 3 against Saara Orav and Federica Trevisan, but their match was left unfinished (5-5).

SINGLES
Houston looked to turn things around in singles play, but ultimately fell short against their ranked opponent.

Despite their matches ending unfinished, Cortijo Parreno and Pedemonti were the only Cougars to win at least one singles set. Pedemonti earned the first set victory against her rival Anastasia Smirnova, 6-4. Cortijo Parreno won her first set on Court 3 in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (9-7) against Anna Bowtell.

Rice picked up wins on Courts 1, 2 and 4 to clinch the victory. Court 1 was decided first with Victoria Smirnova defeated Dzemeshkevich (6-1, 6-0). On Court 2, Slisane fell in both sets (6-2, 6-2) against her rival Trevisan. Allison Zipoli outlasted Gerits in both sets (6-2, 6-1) on Court 4 to seal the victory for the Owls.
