Cincinnati Evens Series as Bats Awake

CINCINNATI – Cincinnati scored nine runs between the third and fourth innings highlighted by a grand slam from Cole Harting to even the three-game series as part of a 13-3, seven-inning run-rule victory against Houston on Saturday afternoon from UC Baseball Stadium.
After Houston (21-10, 3-2 American) took a one-run advantage, scoring twice in the third, the Bearcats chased Houston starter Nathan Medrano in the home half, using three hits including a three-run home run from Griffin Merritt to take a four-run lead.
One inning later, a pair of walks and a hit by pitch were followed by Harting's long ball. The grand slam was the first allowed by the Cougars since April 11, 2021. Cincinnati's (12-17, 2-3 American) 13 runs matched the most allowed by Houston this season.
Medrano (4-2) drew the loss, allowing six runs on five hits alongside three walks and a strikeout in 2.1 innings. The result snapped a stretch of three consecutive games with eight-plus strikeouts by the right-hander.
Cincinnati starter Beau Keathley (3-1) tossed a complete game, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits while walking three and striking out six.
Ryan Hernandez saw his 11-game on-base streak and seven-game hit streak end. Six different Cougars recorded the team's six hits. Cincinnati's offense collected 11 hits and batted .700 (7-for-10) with runners in scoring position.

The teams close the three-game series at 11 a.m. CT Sunday. Houston will send right-hander Derrick Cherry (2-1, 3.86 ERA) to the mound. Cincinnati has not announced a starter. The contest can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on The Varsity Network.
