Wingate University graduate returns to Houston in coaching role
HOUSTON – Former Wingate University and League City-Clear Falls HS volleyball middle blocker Sophie Schaff has been named Houston volleyball's volunteer assistant under the tutelage of head coach David Rehr Wednesday.
"We are excited to add Sophie to our staff," Houston head coach David Rehr said. "Sophie has high level experience as a standout player at Wingate University and playing under a legendary coach in Sheldon Collier. We are excited to add her on many levels, her ability to relate to our players will make her a positive impact to our program."
Schaff spent all five years at Wingate leading the Bulldogs to the AVCA National Championships in 2020, to the NCAA National Quarterfinals in 2018, to the second round of the NCAA Southeast Regional in 2021 and 2019. As a freshman in 2017, Wingate made it to the third round of the NCAA Southeast Regional. Schaff is a two-time AVCA All-American honorable mention and three-time all-SAC selection.
In 2021, Schaff ranked 15th nationally in blocks/set (1.23), ranked fifth in the South Atlantic Conference in points/set (3.71), was named an AVCA All-American honorable mention and helped guide the Bulldogs to conference leading marks in blocks/set (2.52), which ranked eighth nationally, opponent hitting percentage (.105), which ranked fifth nationally, and a tie for the SAC regular season title.
