Western Carolina Evens Series

HOUSTON – Houston Baseball was limited to four hits, dropping the middle game of a three-game set, 6-3 to Western Carolina on Saturday night from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.

The loss snapped Houston's four-game win streak. The Cougars (15-8) entered the game with a streak of six consecutive contests with double-digit hits. Houston finished 0-for-9 (.000) with runners aboard and 1-for-10 (.100) with two outs.

Western Carolina (11-12) earned the win despite stranding 10 runners while finishing 0-for-12 (.000) with runners in scoring position and 1-for-10 (.100) with two outs. Reliever Jacob Corn (3-1) earned the victory behind 3.0 scoreless innings. Zach Franklin secured his second save.

After managing just two hits between the fourth and seventh inning, Zach Arnold provided the Cougars a spark in the eighth, connecting on a leadoff 404-foot solo home run into left center, trimming Houston's deficit to 6-3.

Houston starter Nathan Medrano (3-1) was saddled with the loss, tossing 5.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits while walking three and striking out a career-high nine.

The Cougars scored runs in consecutive innings via wild pitches. With Cameron Nickens at the plate, ball four skipped to the backstop, allowing Anthony Tulimero to score in the second inning. An inning later, Zach Arnold walked, stole second and stole third before racing home on a wild pitch.

Western Carolina took a one-run lead in the fourth on a sacrifice bunt from Cameron Murray. The Catamounts struck for two more in the sixth courtesy of a Brandon Butterworth RBI-double and Zach Ketterman sacrifice fly.

UP NEXT
The teams close the three-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park. Western Carolina will send right-hander Gavin Mortenson (1-2, 4.50 ERA) to the mound. Houston has not yet announced a starter.

The contest will serve as Kids Day and Family Day at the ballpark. Kids (12 and under) get in free with their youth jersey and may run the bases postgame. Tickets are available for as low as $10 and can be purchased by clicking here.
