Louisiana starter Jeff Wilson retired 12 consecutive batters between the fourth and eighth innings, providing the Ragin' Cajuns (8-7) offense time to get going. Wilson (1-0) tossed a complete game, allowing four hits and one run while walking a pair and striking out 10.
For a fifth consecutive game, Houston (10-6) cracked the scoreboard in the first inning. Ryan Hernandez sent an RBI-single through the right side on an 0-2 count, scoring Zach Arnold who reached on a fielder's choice.
Two of Houston's four hits came during the opener frame. Anthony Tulimero saw his 15-game on-base streak snapped in the loss. Brandon Uhse logged two hits and contributed Houston's lone extra-base hit.
After two quick outs in the third, Louisiana used a Carson Roccaforte single, stolen base, and Heath Hood RBI-single to knot the game at one. Roccaforte put the Ragin' Cajuns ahead on an RBI-groundout in the fifth and Bobby Lada struck a solo home run in the sixth.
Cougar starter Jaycob Deese (0-1), who entered play with a 1.93 ERA in 14.0 innings, allowed a career-high 10 hits and six runs (five earned) across 6.1 innings. The right-hander permitted two walks and struck out four.
The Ragin' Cajuns scored nine runs between the fifth and eighth innings. Roccaforte registered four hits and as many RBIs. Hood collected three hits and as many RBIs. Ten of Louisiana's 17 hits came during the seventh and eighth innings.
