Shaw Grand Slam Ends Thursday Dramatically

Todd twirls 9.0 inning complete game, Shaw completely destroys walk-off grand slam
GAME 1
The Cougars (10-12) dropped a tale of two halves to the Broncos in the doubleheader opener 7-4, allowing seven unanswered runs.
Houston got to the Boise State (17-5) starter Hannah Bailey early in the first game of the doubleheader, tagging the starter for four runs on six hits over 2.1 innings. It marked just the fourth time in Bailey's three seasons in Boise that the pitcher had allowed four runs in a start.
A walk in the first inning to right fielder Bethany Busch and a perfectly executed hit-and-run by catcher Kat Ray Brown put runners on the corners for second baseman Becca Schulte, whose groundout plated Busch.
In the third inning, Busch started the scoring again with her second walk of the game. Another base knock by Brown put runners at first and second. A delayed steal by Busch put runners on the corner for Schulte, who singled, scoring Busch for the second time. Third baseman Ja'Naiya Thomas then doubled to deep left field, scoring Brown and moving Schulte to third. A single by first baseman Britaney Shaw, her second hit of the game, plated Schulte for the Cougars' third run of the inning.
Boise State scored two runs in the fourth, fifth and three runs in the sixth innings to take the lead late. The Broncos hit a pair of two-run home runs in the game. One off Houston senior Kenna Wilkey in the fourth inning and then one off junior Megan Lee in the sixth inning.
GAME 2
A sensational ninth inning ended in the most dramatic fashion, a walk-off grand slam by Shaw giving the Cougars a 6-2 win in nine innings.

Drama ensued in the bottom of the ninth inning. Junior Paige Hulsey, a defensive replacement earlier in the game, walked to lead off the inning and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brown. A collision between Hulsey and the Broncos shortstop sent bodies sprawling to the dirt. Hulsey walked to third, was tagged out and then sent back to second base by the umpires. Head coach Kristin Vesely argued the decision. Then the Boise State head coach argued and then the game went under protest. The umpires resorted to the rule book, then made a phone call to get further clarification.
Shaw had homework to do or something because she decided in the ninth inning with emphatic oomph that she was ready to go home by obliterating a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning, sending the Cougars home with a 6-2 win.
Graduate student Hannah Todd set a career-high in innings pitched, twirling a 9.0 inning complete-game against the Broncos. Todd spun five-consecutive scoreless innings, allowing the two runs on solo home runs in the first and seventh innings. Todd became just the ninth pitcher in UH softball history to toss 9.0-plus innings, which had happened just 16 times prior to Thursday.
Boise State used a lead-off home run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead that held until Shaw drilled her first home run of the season in the fourth inning, a two-run shot to give the Cougars the lead.
Boise State forced extra innings with a one-out home run in the top of the seventh inning, the third extra-inning game of the season for Houston.
Shaw finished the day with four hits, two home runs and seven RBI across the two games on Thursday.
