Senior at -1 as play suspended due to darkness in Final Round at Eagle Creek Golf Club
ORLANDO – University of Houston senior Ariana Saenz fired an even-par 72 in Monday's Second Round and was even through 12 holes of the Final Round to lead the Cougars at the UCF Challenge.
The tournament was originally scheduled to be played with 18 holes each day starting Sunday and running through Tuesday. However, with the threat of inclement weather on Tuesday, tournament officials chose to continue play with the Final Round beginning immediately after Monday's Second Round.
The tournament was halted due to darkness with most teams finishing 13-14 holes. Teams will finish their Final Rounds beginning at 7:45 a.m. (CST) Tuesday on the 6,349-yard, par-72 course at Eagle Creek Golf Club.
After opening the tournament with a 71 Sunday, Saenz overcame a difficult stretch which saw her bogey three straight holes. Fortunately, the Porter, Texas, native recovered to birdie two of her last three holes and was tied for 39th at -1.
Sophomore Delaney Martin was tied for 47th at +1, while senior Maria Jose Martinez was tied for 50th at +2. Senior Annie Kim stood in a tie for 61st at +4 with sophomore Nicole Abelar tied for 72nd at +5.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 1-under 287 in the morning round and were tied with No. 46 Ohio State for 12th at even par.
No. 6 Wake Forest held the lead when play was suspended at -39 to finish 10 strokes in front of No. 34 Kentucky. No. 7 Virginia (-24), Charleston (-18), No. 12 Auburn (-17), No. 40 Michigan State (-15), Kent State (-11), No. 31 Miami (Fla.) (-9), No. 33 Iowa State (-8) and NC State (-7) rounded out the Top 10.
Wake Forest's Carolina Lopez Chacarra stood atop the individual leaderboard at -16 to stand three strokes ahead of Kentucky's Jensen Castle. Wake Forest's Rachel Kuehn finished Monday's play in third at -10, while Iowa State's Taglao Jeeravivitaporn and Kentucky's Rikke Svejgaard were tied for fourth at -9.
