Cougars’ singles play victory highlights Monday
HOUSTON – Houston Tennis recorded its sixth home win of the season with a 6-1 victory against Northwestern State on Monday afternoon at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility. The Cougars (6-4) started off the afternoon with doubles play, followed by singles play.
Houston only allowed the Lady Demons (5-4) to put one point on the board in doubles play.
Houston fell short in doubles play when duos, Azul Pedemonti and Maria Dzemeshkevich, Laura Slisane and Blanca Cortijo Parreno, and Elena Trencheva and Gabriela Giraldo all fell against their rivals.
In singles action, Giraldo earned the Cougars their first point of the day by dominating on Court 5 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Viktorie Wojcikova. Cortijo Parreno gave Houston the 2-1 lead, defeating Ayu Ishibashi, 6-3, 6-2.
Trencheva followed the winning streak for the team, topping Northwestern State's Patrycja Polanska, 6-4, 6-4.
The momentum in singles continued at Court 1, where Dzemeshkevich topped Rozi Dohnalova, 6-3, 6-2. Shortly after, Slisane defeated Klevisar, 6-3, 6-2 on Court 2.
In the final match, Pedemonti found herself in a battle on Court 3 against Minetti, sealing the victory for the Cougars, 6-4, 7-5.
The Cougars are now 5-3 all-time against the Lady Demons.
