
Men's Track and Field takes Seventh-Straight Conference Title

Men finish in first with four individual champions, women in fourth with one champion
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Houston men's track team secured its seventh-straight Indoor Conference Championship title while the women placed fourth on Saturday at the 2022 American Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The men's track and field team finished in first for the seventh-straight year with 141.5 total points. After ending the first day of competition in seventh, the women's team elevated its team score to 65 and placed fourth overall.
Following the competition, head coach Leroy Burrell and his staff were named Indoor Coaching Staff of the Year while freshman standout Shaun Maswanganyi earned both Most Valuable Performer and Freshman of the Year.
Men's Track
Tyrell Valentine earned the Cougars' first podium appearance of the day with a second-place finish in the men's 400 meter with a 47.10. De'Vion Wilson followed it up winning his first career conference championship title in the men's 60-meter hurdles. Wilson easily won with a 7.88 mark and secured 10 points for the Cougars.
Shaun Maswanganyi edged out the competition for his first indoor conference championship title in the men's 60 meter. His 6.72 secured the Cougars' seventh-straight individual championship title in the 60 meter. Jordan Booker also made the podium finishing in third with a 6.77.
The 800 meter was decided by only two-hundredths of a second as two Houston runners crossed the finish line. Adam Mason secured the top spot with a 1:53.35 and Christian Gilmore closely followed in second with a 1:53.37.
The men's 4x400 meter relay team defended its conference championship title finishing in first in the final event of the day. The relay team won hastily with a 3:09.48 for first place and ultimately secured Houston's team championship title.
Men's Field
In his first jump of the competition, Jadon Brome secured a 15.49m mark in the men's triple jump. No one could match his performance and Brome earned his first collegiate individual championship title.
Women's Field
Nu'uausala Tuilefano took the women's shot put championship title with a 16.18 throw. Going into the final round, Tuilefano was in the third before overtaking the top spot on her final throw of the competition.
Women's Track
Naomi Taylor finished the women's first podium finish of the day with a second place mark in the women's 60-meter hurdle with a time of 8.21
Cecilia Tamayo-Garza also earned a spot on the podium in the women's 200 meter clocking a 23.81 for a third-place finish.
Houston closed out the competition with a second-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay. Going into the final lap of the race, the Cougars were in third. But, anchor Iman Babineaux passed the competition and pushed the Cougars into second place and finished with a time of 3:40.22
UP NEXT
The Cougars will now wait to see how many athletes will qualify to compete at the NCAA Championships from March 11-12.
