The Cougars tied their win streak record with 17 consecutive victories on Sunday
HOUSTON – The University of Houston volleyball team remained at No. 23 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, marking the team's fourth straight week at No. 23.
The team swept both of its matches last week, defeating Tulsa on Friday and Wichita State on Sunday in straight-set fashions. Houston tied its record win streak,
originally set in 1994, with its 17th consecutive win on Sunday. Head Coach David Rehr's squad will look to break the record in front of a home crowd on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Fertitta Center against Memphis.
Houston has defeated nine of its last 10 opponents via straight-sets, including each of its last seven. The last time Houston lost a set was the third frame in a five-set win over Wichita State on Oct. 21. Since then, the Cougars have won 23 consecutive sets.
While Houston has a 23 ranking in the coaches poll, the team also earned a spot at No. 18 in the NCAA's latest RPI release, the metric the NCAA selections committee relies on when making postseason determinations.
The Cougars started last week with a three-set win over Tulsa on the road. Junior Kate Georgiades posted 34 digs in the victory, setting a program-record for digs in a three-set match, passing Olivia O'Dell's 32 against Cincinnati on Oct. 18, 2015. The team also tied the program-record for assists in a three-set match with 53, a mark that has been hit twice before (vs. Rice in 2006, vs. SMU in 2007).
Houston followed up its Friday performance with another sweep of a conference opponent in Wichita State. Senior Abbie Jackson tallied 15 kills in the win, while senior Rachel Tullos, sophomore Kellen Morin and graduate Kortlyn Henderson all recorded five blocks.
UP NEXT
Houston returns home next weekend to start its senior weekend, honoring this year's graduating class in the final regular season home weekend of the year. The Cougars start with a 7 p.m. match on Friday against Memphis, before a 1 p.m. match on Sunday against SMU. While Houston will honor its seniors all weekend, the Senior Day ceremony will be prior to the match on Sunday.
