Georgiades earns her fifth honor of the season
HOUSTON – University of Houston volleyball junior libero Kate Georgiades was named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after a record week, marking the fifth time this season that she's won the award.
Georgiades finished the week with 50 digs, averaging 8.33 per set, while also tallying two aces, eight assists and went a perfect 22-for-22 on service receptions.
The junior started the weekend with a record-breaking performance against Tulsa, tallying a new three-set program-best 34 digs. She followed up her Friday performance with another solid outing on Sunday against Wichita State, tallying a match-leading 16 digs.
Senior Abbie Jackson also earned a spot on the honor roll for the fourth straight week. Jackson finished the week with 29 kills and a .381 hitting percentage, averaging 4.83 kills per set. She also added two aces, 11 digs and one block while going a perfect 33-for-33 on service receptions.
The team swept both of its matches last week, defeating Tulsa on Friday and Wichita State on Sunday in straight-set fashions. Houston tied its record win streak, originally set in 1994, with its 17th consecutive win on Sunday.
Head Coach David Rehr's squad will look to break the record in front of a home crowd on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Fertitta Center against Memphis.
