
Tennis Completes Day One of Baylor Invite

Cougars pick up four singles and six doubles victories on first day of action
WACO, Texas – The University of Houston Tennis program earned four singles wins as well as six doubles victories on the first day of the Baylor Invite competing against Baylor, TCU and Washington State on Friday at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
"Very proud of our team effort," Houston Tennis Head Coach Helena Besovic said. "We competed hard on each court and stayed focused throughout the long day."
Houston started off the day with doubles competition sweeping its opponents from Baylor and Washington State. Azul Pedemonti and Maria Dzemeshkevich defeated Baylor's duo Brooke Thompson and Danielle Tuhten, 7-6. Laura Slisane and Sonya Kovalenko teamed up to defeat Washington State's Eva Alvarez Sande and Maxine Murphy, 6-3.
Blanca Cortijo Parreno and Sophie Schouten defeated Washington State's Elyse Tse and Yura Nakagawa, 6-3. Gabriela Cortes and Elena Trencheva continued Houston's success against the Cougars defeating Stefaniia Mikhailova and Fifa Kumhom, 6-4.
In the second round of doubles action, Schouten and Cortijo Parreno returned to the court to defeat Baylor's Thompson and Tuhten, 7-6. Kovalenko and Slisane picked up a second round two doubles victory for Houston against Washington State's Mikhailova and Kumhom, 6-3.
In singles action, Houston earned four singles victories against Washington State. Senior Pedemonti defeated Nakagawa 6-4, 7-5, while freshman Kovalenko topped Mikhailova, 6-1, 6-0. Slisane defeated Tse, 7-6, 6-4, and Trencheva closed out the day with a win in a tough battle against Alvarez Sande 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5).
The Baylor Invite will resume play at 9 a.m., Saturday with doubles competition, followed by singles competition, at the Hurd Tennis Center.
