Volleyball Moves into AVCA Coaches Poll at No. 24

HOUSTON – The University of Houston volleyball team is ranked for the first time since the final poll of 1994. The Cougars, after receiving votes for the past five weeks, moved into the American Volleyball Coaches Association Poll at No. 24 following back-to-back sweeps of conference opponents last weekend. The team also has the tenth best RPI in the country, according to the latest release from the NCAA on Monday morning.

Houston (17-2, 8-0 The American) is off to its best start since the 1975 team also started 17-2. The Cougars won their first match against a ranked opponent since 2003 with a 3-1 victory over then-No. 23 UCF on Oct. 7 and boast a 2-2 record against teams in the top 25 in RPI.

The Cougars started receiving votes in the Sept. 12 poll, after a 3-0 showing at the Maroon and White Invite, which included wins against South Alabama and Mississippi State, who both made the 2021 NCAA tournament. Mississippi State also was receiving votes at the time.

The only losses Houston has suffered this year were against No. 1 Texas, which included a thrilling first-set victory for the Cougars, and Rice, who is now No. 21.

Overall, the team has the 11^th best winning percentage in the country (.895) and has multiple players ranked inside the top 50 in various statistical categories.

Houston returns home for a five-game homestand starting on Friday, Oct. 21 with the Cougars' Dig Pink match against Wichita State at 7 p.m. Fans can get free admission to the match by showing a receipt of a donation of any amount to the Side-Out Foundation at the Box Office.
