Georgiades Named American Defensive Player of the Week

Sophomore libero earns second weekly honor this season; Junior outside hitter Abbie Jackson named to Honor Roll

Junior outside hitter Abbie Jackson joined Georgiades in collecting accolades this week, being named to the league's Honor Roll for the first time in 2021.

Georgiades and Jackson led the Cougars to a 1-1 record to open American Athletic Conference play with an impressive 3-0 win over Wichita State on Sunday inside the Fertitta Center.

Houston now stands with an 11-3 overall record this season.

ABOUT KATE GEORGIADES
In two matches last week, Georgiades averaged 7.4 digs per set and finished third among the Cougars with three service aces.
Â
She recorded a career-high 41 digs in the loss to Tulsa on Friday, posting the third-highest single-match total in school history and the most since Olivia O'Dell set the school record with 47 digs against Tulane on Oct. 7, 2015.

The College Station, Texas, native led all players with 18 kills in Sunday's 3-0 win over Wichita State.

She has posted double-digit digs in all but one match in 2021, including each of the last eight.
Â
Georgiades now leads the American Athletic Conference with 5.3 digs per set and stands 16th with 0.3 service aces per set.

ABOUT ABBIE JACKSON
Jackson earned her first weekly honor of the season after leading the Cougars offensively.
Â
The Gig Harbor, Wash., native averaged a team-best 4.62 kills per set to lead Houston. Jackson posted 23 kills with 11 digs for her team-leading fourth double-double of the season and added two aces and a block assist against Tulsa on Friday in the American Athletic Conference opener.

Jackson followed that performance with a match-high 14 kills with five digs and three total blocks in Sunday's win over Wichita State.
Â
She has now posted double-digit kills in every match this season and each of the last 15 dating back to last year.
Â
Jackson ranks third in The American with 3.75 kills per set, ninth with 0.3 service aces per set and stands second in the league with 4.5 points per set.
Â
UCF middle blocker Claudia Dillon was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week.
Â
Cincinnati freshman middle blocker Abby Walker, SMU middle blocker Alex Glover, SMU outside hitter Rachel Woulfe and Tulane middle hitter Anna Davis joined Jackson on the Honor Roll.

UP NEXT
Georgiades, Jackson and the Cougars hit the road for four consecutive contests. The road swing begins at 6 p.m., Sept. 29, against Tulane in New Orleans and continues at Noon (CDT), Oct. 3, against Temple in Philadelphia.

From there, the Cougars head to Florida to face UCF (Oct. 8) and South Florida (Oct. 10).

The Cougars return to the friendly confines of the Fertitta Center to play host to SMU (Oct. 15) and Memphis (Oct. 17) in American Athletic Conference play.
