Georgiades Named American Defensive Player of the Week

Sophomore libero takes first weekly award of collegiate career

This is the first weekly award for Georgiades during her collegiate career.

The College Station, Texas, native returned to her hometown last weekend to help lead the Cougars to a 2-1 record and second-place finish at the Texas A&M Invitational.

Georgiades led Houston to wins over UTSA and Albany with 54 digs for an average of 4.9 digs per set. She recorded 12+ digs in all three matches last weekend and has posted double-digit digs in all but one match this season to guide Houston to the program's third-best start (8-1) after nine matches.

She recorded 12 digs against the host Aggies in the tournament opener Friday and followed that performance with 19 digs and a pair of services aces in a win over UTSA.

Georgiades finished the tournament with 23 digs against Albany for her third match this season with 20+ digs.
Â
She ranks fifth in The American with 4.5 digs per set and is tied for 14th in the league with 0.3 service aces per set.
Â
UCF outside hitter McKenna Melville was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week.

East Carolina defensive specialist Tia Shum, South Florida defensive specialist CC Clausen, South Florida outside hitter Marta Cvitkovic, Tulane middle blocker Kayla Dinkins and Wichita State middle blocker Lauren McMahon were named to the American Weekly Honor Roll.

Georgiades and the Cougars continue their road swing as they play at the Bama Bash this weekend in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Houston opens that tournament at 10 a.m., Friday, as it faces Western Carolina before meeting the host Crimson Tide at 6 p.m., later that evening. The Cougars close out the tournament and their non-conference schedule when they meet Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m., Saturday.

From there, the Cougars open American Athletic Conference play inside the Fertitta Center. Houston meets Tulsa on Sept. 24 before taking on Wichita State on Sept. 26.
