
Houston Opens 2021 Fall Season on Monday

Cougars tee off at Sam Golden Invitational at Wildhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch
DENTON, Texas – The University of Houston Women's Golf program begins a new era Monday morning when it tees off at the Sam Golden Invitational at Wildhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch.
Teams will play 36 holes Monday, beginning with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start on the 6,288-yard, par-72 layout. The Final Round begins with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start Tuesday.
The Cougars will compete for the first time under Carolyn Macow Leatherwood Head Coach Lydia Gumm, who is only the second head coach in the program's young history. Gumm served the Cougars for three season as an assistant coach starting in 2018 before being elevated to head coach in June.
During her time as an assistant coach, Gumm led the Cougars to three regular-season tournament team titles as well as the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championships crown with two NCAA Regional team berths and an NCAA Championships individual appearance.

THE LINEUP
The Cougars will be represented by senior Maria Jose Martinez, senior Annie Kim, senior Ariana Saenz, sophomore Delaney Martin and junior All-American Karen Fredgaard.
A year ago, Fredgaard enjoyed of the best individual seasons in program history. The Asserbo, Denmark, native led the Cougars with a 70.84 scoring average and 14 rounds of par or better, including seven in the 60s.
She earned medalist honors at the season-opening UCF Challenge in February for the first individual title of her career and went on to be named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year.
Following the season in which the Cougars received their seventh straight NCAA Regional bid, Fredgaard was named to the All-America First Team by the Women's Golf Coaches Association and Golfweek, a first in program history.
Martin joined Fredgaard on the All-American Athletic Conference Team. The Boerne, Texas, native posted a 74.07 scoring average with four rounds of par or better in her first collegiate season and tied for seventh at the Texas State Invitational in her first event as a Cougar.
Senior Ariana Saenz finished third among the Cougars with a 73.63 scoring average and tied for second with 10 rounds of par or better. The Porter, Texas, native earned a pair of Top-5 finishes, including a fifth-place showing at the Lone Star Invitational after firing three straight rounds of par or better at Golf Club of Houston.
Martinez captured the title at the Lone Star Invitational after posting three straight rounds in the 60s for the first title of her collegiate career. With a total of 14-under 202, she set a school 54-hole record.
Kim tied for 19th at the UCF Challenge to open the season a year ago, thanks to scores of 70-69 on the first two days.
THE FIELD
The Cougars will compete against Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, TCU, Mississippi State, Kansas State, Missouri, Purdue, Tulsa, Tulane, Charlotte, UTSA and host North Texas.

Following the Sam Golden Invitational, Houston continues its fall season at the Schooner Fall Classic, set for Sept. 26-27 at Belmar Golf Club in Norman, Okla.
From there, the Cougars will tee off at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 4-6 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. The Cougars will join with their UH male counterparts at that event, which will air on GOLF Channel each day.
