HOUSTON – John Houston, a 24-year veteran of the sports medicine department at the University of Houston, has been promoted to Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine. The announcement was made by Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman on Thursday.
In this role, Houston will oversee the delivery of student-focused, high quality sports medicine services and mental health/well-being programs that meet both University expectations and athletics industry standards. He will continue to work daily with the Houston Men's Basketball and Men's Golf programs.
"John is a leader in the sports medicine industry and has been a tremendous asset to our athletics department since he arrived in 1997," Pezman said. "He has helped lead our sports medicine group and our entire athletics department through the COVID-19 pandemic over the last year and his dedicated efforts allowed many of our programs to compete in competition through various challenges. John has always been focused on providing exceptional care to our student-athletes and I know he will continue to do the same in this expanded role."
"I would like to thank Chris Pezman and his administrative staff for this opportunity," Houston said. "I look forward to continuing my work with a great athletics department and sports medicine program. It is a privilege to work side-by-side with such a dedicated and professional sports medicine staff. To the best of my abilities, I will work to support them and their tireless efforts in the health care of our student-athletes."
Houston was elevated to assistant athletics director for sports medicine in August 2019. He handles the Men's Basketball team's day-to-day needs within the sports medicine program, including the evaluation of injuries, oversight of treatment and rehabilitation programs, coordination of physician care and scheduling of preseason physical exams.
During his time with the Cougars, Houston has worked for six of the nine head coaches in program history and been a part of 424 victories, four conference championships and 12 postseason appearances, including four NCAA Tournament appearances.
He returned to the state of Texas after serving three years as the assistant athletics trainer at Marshall. While there, Houston was the primary athletics trainer for the men's basketball team and assisted with other teams.
A native of Fritch, Texas, he graduated from Sandford-Fritch High School in 1986 and earned his undergraduate degree at Texas Tech in 1991. Houston received his master's degree in sports administration in 1994 from the University of Kentucky, where he served as a graduate assistant athletics trainer.
He went to Marshall after serving as the head athletics trainer at Georgetown College.
A certified athletics trainer, Houston is a member of the National Athletics Trainer Association, the Southwest Athletics Trainer Association and the College Athletics Trainers Association.
He also is a licensed trainer in the state of Texas and a Certified Exercise Specialist with the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
He is married to the former Amie Winn, a four-year letterwinner in gymnastics at Kentucky and the 1990 Southeast Regional All-Around Individual champion. They have a son, Trey.
