Houston Seniors Shine at Tom Tellez Invitational

Cougars record NCAA top-10 marks, program records and PR’s to conclude regular season
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program closed out the regular season with two program records and a multitude of personal best at the Tom Tellez Invitational.

Mikaila Martin gets better with time as she shattered the program record in the Women's Hammer Throw for the fourth time this season. The senior thrower placed second in the event with a toss of 66.89m (219-05) for the highest collegiate finish of the day. She was trailed by Houston senior Taylor Scaife, who closed out her senior day with a personal best in the event at 64.22m (210-08).
Antonio Ruiz launched into the Houston record books, becoming the program record holder in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault after an outstanding performance on his senior day. Ruiz cleared 5.45m (17-10.50) on his second attempt to break the program record that was set last week by his teammate Christyan Sampy at the Texas Invite. Ben Percefull closed out the day in second-place with a personal best performance in the event, clearing 5.24m (17-02.25).
The Cougar sprinters did what they do best as Shaun Maswanganyi and Travis Collins each secured a top-10 time in the NCAA this season in the 100-meter. In a field that was packed with world-class talent, Cougar alum, Cameron Burrell won the event after clocking a time of 10.01. Maswanganyi finished second with the fourth-fastest time among collegians this season at 10.04, trailed by Travis Collins with a lifetime best 10.16.
In the 200-meter, Cecilia Tamayo-Garza secured a second-place finish in the event with a time of 23.17 which is just shy of her personal best in the event. Brianne Bethel finished in third-place at 23.24 to round out the podium for the Cougars, trailed by Camille Rutherford with a PR in the race at 23.51 for fifth-place.
On the men's, side Maswanganyi improved to No. 4 in the NCAA this season after winning the event with a time of 20.14. Christian Hamberlin closed out the event in third-place with a PR in the event at 20.51.
Dayo Akindele recorded a personal best to win the 110-meter hurdles. The senior clocked a time of 13.51, securing the eighth-fastest time in the NCAA this season.
It was a clean sweep for the Houston Women in the long jump as Samiyah Samuels led UH in the event with a top finish behind a leap of 6.13m (20-01.50). Destiny Lawrence picked up a PR with a mark of 6.02m (19-09.00), followed by Justice Henderson in third-place at 5.54m (18-02.25).
Triston Gibbons had a fantastic day, winning both the Discus and the Shot Put. Gibbons won the Discus with a mark of 54.09m (177-05) and the Shot Put with a toss of 17.88m (58-08.00).
Nora Monie secured her fifth consecutive first-place finish in the Discus, finishing atop the standings with a toss of 55.12m (180-10) on her second attempt of the day.
Nu'uausala Tuilefano became the holder of two of the best throws in program history, winning the Shot Put with the second-best toss in UH history. She won the event with mark of 16.30m (53.05-75).
Miles Marhofer secured a second-place finish in the Men's Hammer Throw after turning in a program top-five performance. Marhofer finished on the podium after a toss of 59.87m (196-05).
Houston will return to action next week when it begins the postseason at the 2021 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships from March 14-16 in Tampa, Fla. on the campus of USF.
