Taylor Scaife Captures Conference Hammer Throw Title

Cougars conclude opening day of championships with meet record and league title
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program concluded the first day of meet action at the 2021 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a conference title and several outstanding performances.
Action will resume for the Cougars tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. ET

Taylor Scaife secured the first conference title of the weekend for the Cougars, becoming the first Cougar since 1998 to take home a conference crown in the Women's Hammer Throw. Scaife earned the first outdoor title of her storied career with a toss of 64.79m (212.16), a personal best for the senior. Mikaila Martin closed out the day with a second-place finish in the event with a throw of 63.31m (208-8).
Miles Marhofer scored the first points of the weekend for the Cougars with a seventh-place finish in the Men's Hammer Throw. Marhofer's best toss went 56.66m (185-10).
On the track, Devin Vallejo-Bannister finished fifth in heat and qualified on time to advance to the final of the 1500-meter. Vallejo-Bannister clocked a time of 3:51.22, just shy of his personal-best in the event.
All four Cougar competitors in the 200-meter on the women's side will move on after the Cougars won three of the preliminary heats. Brianne Bethel led the field with the fourth fastest time in UH history at 23.11. Cecilia Tamayo-Garza (23.18), Camille Rutherford (23.63) and Tristan Evelyn (24.04) will also represent the Cougars in the final.
Cougars will make up seven of the eight finalists in the men's 200-meter led by a strong performance from Jordan Booker. Booker clocked a personal-best in the prelims with a time of 20.64. Shaun Maswanganyi recorded the second-fastest time in the prelims at 20.89, followed by Christian Hamberlin (20.94), Travis Collins (20.97), Edward Sumler IV (21.14), Nicholas Alexander (21.24) and Dylan Brown (21.30).
The hurdles proved to be yet another bright spot for the Cougars as Quivell Jordan shattered the conference meet record in the prelims of the 400-meter hurdles. Jordan blazed the track with a time of 49.76 to win his heat with the sixth-fastest time in the NCAA this season, setting a new personal-best in the event. Erin Derrow advanced to the final of the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.36 and will represent the Cougar women in the event.
