Samuels set the tone for the Cougars with a stellar performance in the Long Jump. The senior compiled a strong series, highlighted by two season-best marks. On her first attempt of the day, Samuels recorded a leap of 6.41m (21-1/2) ]. She followed it up with a mark of 6.55m (21-6) which would be enough to secure her a spot at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. This marks Samuels third time qualifying for Nationals.
Every Cougar sprinter that competed Thursday advanced to the quarterfinals. Brianne Bethel led UH in the 100-meter with a season-best time of 11.12 in the event. Tristan Evelyn clocked the second-fastest time for the Cougars at 11.19m followed by Cecilia Tamayo-Garza (11.26) and Camille Rutherford (11.27).
The quarterfinal of the 200-meter will feature three Cougar competitors as Bethel finished among the top-10 with a time of 22.91, followed by Tamayo-Garza at 23.15. Rutherford concluded the day with personal-best in the event at 23.22 to advance.
Imari Chatman provided a bright spot for the Cougar hurdlers, moving onto Saturday's quarterfinal of the 400-meter hurdles. Chatman secured the final qualifying spot with a time of 59.46. Sarah Belle clocked personal-best in the 100-meter hurdles but missed the qualifying standard with a time of 13.39.
Sarah Howe closed out her season with a personal-best in the pole vault, matching the second-best clearance in program history at 4.07m (13-4 ¼).
Due to technical difficulties with the measuring equipment at the Hammer Throw, results and NCAA qualifiers for that event will not be available until tomorrow.
