Cougar duo recognized for outstanding performances at conference meet
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program continues to earn recognition after freshman sprinter Shaun Maswanganyi and senior sprinter Brianne Bethel were selected by The American as the winners of the Most Outstanding Performance awards.
Â
The award is presented to student-athletes who recorded the highest-ranking marks on the NCAA performance list during the American Outdoor Track & Field Championships this season. Maswangayi and Bethel join ECU's Ryan Davis and Sommer Knight, along with Memphis graduate student Mona Jaidi.
Â
Maswanganyi continues to have a stellar debut season, as he led a loaded UH sprint group to victory in the 100-meter and 200-meter. The freshman secured a gold medal in the 100-meter dash with a time of 9.87w, shattering the meet record in the event. Maswanganyi's wind-aided time of 19.93 in the 200-meter shattered yet another meet record. A little of a week removed from winning a pair of individual conference titles, Mawanganyi will open regional competition with the top-seed times in both the 100-meter and 200-meter.
Brianne Bethel was a true workhorse for the Cougars in Tampa, competing in the 200-meter, 400-meter, 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay., winning two individual titles. Bethel blazed the track with a time of 22.54 to win the 200-meter and shatter the meet record in the event. Bethel's time ranks fourth in the NCAA this season. Bethel is set to again be a major contributor for the Cougars this week as an entry in the 100-meter, 200-meter, 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay.Â
Â
Houston returns to action this afternoon at the NCAA West Region Prelims. The men are set to compete today with events beginning at 1:30 p.m.
