CHANDLER, Ariz. – In its final team outing of the 2021 season, the University of Houston Women's Golf program finished third at the Let Them Play Classic at Whirlwind Golf Club on Friday afternoon.
Competing on the 6,312-yard, Cat Tail Course, the Cougars posted a team score of 220 and finished with a 54-hole score of 649.
North Texas captured the team title with a score of 637, while Purdue finished second at 644. Mississippi State (650) and Oregon State (670) rounded out the Top-Five team leaders.
North Texas' Audrey Tan earned medalist honors with a score of 9-under 207 after posting a 68 Friday. Purdue's Danielle DuToit finished third at 213, while Sifat Sagoo (Purdue) and Lauren Cox (North Texas) tied for fourth at 215.
Senior Ariana Saenz tied for second individually with a score of 7-under 209. The Porter, Texas, native overcame a slow start which saw her at +4 through her front nine.
Saenz recovered on her back nine with three birdies on her final five holes, including back-to-back efforts on Nos. 14-15.
Junior Maria Jose Martinez posted a 74 Friday and tied for sixth overall at even-par 216. It was the Alvarado, Mexico, native's second Top-10 finish of the season.
American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Zoe Slaughter tied with Saenz for the team's round of the day with a 73 and tied for 21st at 224.
Freshman Delaney Martin tied for 33rd at 229.
The Cougars competed in this season-ending tournament after the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional was canceled week due to wet weather without a single stroke being played. Schools received a waiver from the NCAA providing an exception in the competition rules, allowing those participating schools impacted by the Regional cancellation to play in an additional season-ending event.
