SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – University of Houston sophomore Karen Fredgaard posted a 77 to tie for 87th following the First Round of the NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club on Friday.
Starting her day off No. 10 on the 6,384-yard course, Fredgaard opened her round with back-to-back bogeys. The Asserbo, Denmark, native rallied with her first birdie of the day on the par-4 14th hole but made bogey on No. 18 to cap her first nine.
Fredgaard endured a bogey on No. 2 and a triple bogey on No. 6 before sinking a birdie on the 474-yard, par-5 seventh hole.
Fredgaard earned her inaugural trip to the NCAA Championships as one of the nation's Top-10 players. Although the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional was canceled without a shot being played due to unplayable conditions from wet weather last week, Fredgaard's No. 7 ranking made her one of three student-athletes not from a qualifying team to advance to the nation's top collegiate tournament.
Fredgaard and the field will play 54 holes of stroke play with 18 holes each day. Following 54 holes, the Top-15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play Monday to determine the individual national champion.

This season, Fredgaard has emerged as one of the nation's and the world's leading amateur players. The sophomore leads the Cougars with a 70.27 scoring average and 12 rounds of par or better, including seven in the 60s, and was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year.
She enters the NCAA Championships as the No. 5 player in the latest Golfstat national rankings and at No. 8 in the recent Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.
Competing in five tournaments during the spring season, she has finished among the Top-10 in each event with four Top-Five showings.
Fredgaard captured the individual title at the UCF Challenge to open the season on Jan. 31-Feb. 2 for the first championship of her collegiate career and tied for third at the prestigious Augusta National Women's Amateur at Augusta National Golf Club on March 31-April 3.
Earlier this month, she was selected to compete for Team International during the 2021 Arnold Palmer Cup in June.
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
Fredgaard is the second Cougar student-athlete to make the program's third individual appearance at the NCAA Championships.
All-American and two-time American Athletic Conference Player of the Year Leonie Harm was the first Cougar to compete at the NCAA Championships.
The Gerlingen, Germany, native became the first Cougar to compete at the NCAA Championships after finishing seventh at the 2016 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.
Two years later, she posted a Final-Round 65 and battled through seven-hole playoff to emerge from the 2018 NCAA Austin Regional with an 11th-place finish.
