HOUSTON – University of Houston senior Matt Cole fired a 71 for the second straight day to lead the Cougars and move into a tie for 20th following the Second Round of the NCAA Kingston Springs Regional at Golf Club of Tennessee on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cougars posted a team score of 293 on the 7,107-yard, par-71 course to slip into ninth with a 36-hole total of 572.
No. 26 San Diego State held the second-day lead at 557 with No. 13 Vanderbilt (559), No. 24 Arkansas (563), No. 10 NC State (565) and No. 42 Charlotte (566) and No. 3 Clemson (566) among the Top-Six leaders. No. 46 Kent State (567) and No. 33 Virginia (571) rounded out the Top-Eight teams.
The low five teams and the low individual not from those teams at following Wednesday's Final Round advance to the NCAA Championships, set for May 28-June 2 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Starting his day off No. 10, Cole rebounded from a pair of bogeys in a three-hole stretch midway through his first nine with his first birdie of the day on the 580-yard, par-5 17th hole.
After his final bogey of the day on No. 1, the Fayetteville, Ark., native rallied with a birdie on the par-4 second hole and returned to even par with his final birdie on the par-4 sixth hole.
Cole joined senior teammate Alexander Frances in a tie for 20th at 142.
Seniors Luke Long and Andrew Gibson were tied for 35th, while sophomore Austyn Reily was tied for 62nd at 152.
San Diego State's Youssef Guezzale and Vanderbilt's Reid Davenport were tied for first at 5-under 137. Puwit Anupansuebsai (San Diego State) Pietro Bovari (Virginia), William Buhl (Arkansas) and Evan Brown (Loyola (Md.)) were tied for third at 138.
The Final Round begins at 7:30 a.m., Wednesday.

PAIRINGS
For Wednesday's Final Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Kent State and Virginia.
Reily will start the day for the Cougars off No. 1 at 8:25 a.m., Tuesday, with Gibson (8:36 a.m.), Long (8:47 a.m.), Cole (8:58 a.m.) and Frances (9:09 a.m.) following.

NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY
This is Houston's first team appearance in the NCAA postseason since 2017 when it finished 10th at the NCAA Stanford Regional.
In 2018, Michael Perras was chosen as an individual for the NCAA Bryan Regional, where he finished 24th. The 2020 NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During its history, the Cougars have enjoyed one NCAA Regional team championship, four individual titles and 14 Top-10 team finishes.
