KINGSTON SPRINGS, Tenn. – The University of Houston Men's Golf program wrapped up its 2021 season with a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Kingston Springs Regional at Golf Club of Tennessee on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cougars finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a score of 866 on the 7,107-yard, par-72 course at Golf Club of Tennessee.
Seniors Alexander Frances and Matt Cole each finished at 215 to tie for 28th and lead the Cougars. Senior Luke Long posted the team's low round of the day with a 72 and tied for 34th at 216.
Senior Andrew Gibson tied for 44th at 220. Junior Braxton Watkins replaced sophomore Austyn Reily in the Cougars' lineup Wednesday and finished with an 81 to rank 73rd.
Vanderbilt captured the team championship with a score of 834 to finish 11 strokes ahead of No. 24 Arkansas. No. 26 San Diego State (847), No. 10 NC State (849) and No. 3 Clemson (849) rounded out the Top-Five leaders and advanced to the NCAA Championships in Scottsdale, Ariz.
No. 42 Charlotte (851), No. 33 Virginia (857) and No. 46 Kent State (860) completed the Top Eight.
San Diego State's Puwit Anupansuebsai earned medalist honors with a score of 205 to finish one shot ahead of Arkansas' Tyson Reeder. Vanderbilt's William Moll finished third with a score of 207.
Michigan State's James Piot tied for fourth at 208 and advanced to next week's NCAA Championships as an individual not from a qualifying team.
NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY
This was Houston's first team appearance in the NCAA postseason since 2017 when it finished 10th at the NCAA Stanford Regional.
In 2018, Michael Perras was chosen as an individual for the NCAA Bryan Regional, where he finished 24th. The 2020 NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During its history, the Cougars have enjoyed one NCAA Regional team championship, four individual titles and 14 Top-10 team finishes.
