HOUSTON – The University of Houston Men's Golf program posted its second-best team round of the season to tie for third following the First Round of the NCAA Kingston Springs Regional on Monday afternoon.
The Cougars posted a score of 5-under 279 to join No. 13 Vanderbilt in a tie for third on the 7,107-yard, par-71 course at Golf Club of Tennessee. No. 10 NC State and No. 46 Kent State were tied for first at 277.
Monday's score trailed only the 277 posted in the Second Round of the Bayou City Collegiate Classic on April 5 and was the Cougars' best opening round of the season.
Senior Andrew Gibson led the way for the Cougars to a 68 to finish the first day in a tie for fifth. The Perthshire, Scotland, native wasted little time in moving into red numbers with a birdie on the par-3 10th hole.
Following five straight pars, Gibson returned to even par with a bogey on No. 16. However, that would be the last bogey on his scorecard for the rest of the day.
Gibson rattled off six straight before making three consecutive birdies on Nos. 5-7 and closed his day with two more pars. He joined Kent State's Chris Vandette and Rutgers' Christopher Gotterup in a tie for fifth.
Like Gibson, senior Alexander Frances moved under par early in the First Round with a birdie on the 551-yard, par-5 11th hole. After two birdies on his next four holes, the Stege, Denmark, native returned to even par with a birdie on the par-5 17th hole.
The All-American Athletic Conference star opened his second nine with three straight birdies and rebounded from his final bogey of the day on No. 4 with five straight pars to join Benjamin Shipp (NC State), William Moll (Vanderbilt), Youssef Guezzale (San Diego State), Tyson Reeder and William Buhl (Arkansas) and Van Holmgren (Florida Gulf Coast) in a tie for eighth with a 69.
Seniors Matt Cole and Luke Long were tied for 19th at 71. Sophomore Austyn Reily was tied for 53rd at 75.
Vanderbilt's Reid Davenport held the first-day lead with a 65, while NC State's Maximilian Steinlechner stood in second at 66.
The Second Round begins at 7:30 a.m., Tuesday morning.
