Program Records and Personal Bests Highlight Final Day in Austin

Christyan Sampy shatters longstanding Pole Vault record
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program concluded a strong day weekend of meet action at the Texas Invite with a plethora of personal bests and a program record.

Christyan Sampy recorded his seventh straight podium finish of the outdoor season and became the program recordholder in the pole vault. Sampy shattered the 34-year-old program record that was set in 1987 by David Gatch in the event after clearing 5.41m (17-9). With the finish, Sampy now holds two of the top-five performances in program history in the event.
Sarah Howe outdid her lifetime best in the pole vault to take third-place in the event with a mark of 4.05m (13- 3 ½). Howe now holds two of the five best performances in program history in the event.
Destiny Lawrence secured a second-place finish in the Triple Jump with a leap of 12.80m (42-0) on her third and fifth attempts of the afternoon. Caleb Malbrough and Quinton Stringfellow represented the Cougars in the Triple Jump on the men's side as former Cougar Chris Carter won the event with a mark of 16.33m (53-7). Malbrough took third with a personal best jump of 15.32m (5-3 ¼) on his sixth trip down the runway as Stringfellow closed out the day in fourth-place with a PR of 15.31m (50-2 ¾).
Dayo Akindele and DJ Akindele shined in the 110-meter hurdles, each securing podium finishes in the event. Dayo Akindele took second-place at 13.82, as DJ Akindele finished in third-place with a PR of 13.97. DJ Akindele continued to have a stellar day on the track with his second personal best of the day coming in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 52.65.
In the 400-meter hurdles on the women's side Imari Chatman and Erin Derrow were the among the highest collegiate finishers of the day as Chatman closed out the event in fourth-place at 1:00.18. followed by Derrow in fifth-place at 1:00.33.
Both the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay squad record strong finishes as Brianne Bethel, Aliyah Taylor, Payge Side and Cecilia Tamayo-Garza clock a time of 3:39.01 for second-place. Antonio Ruiz, Tyrell Valentine, Joshua White and Jordan Booker represented UH on the men's side and posted a time of 3:11.62.
Houston will return to action for one final tune-up before the postseason when it honors its seniors on May 7 at the Tom Tellez Invitational.
HOUSTON ATTENDANCE POLICY
Limited tickets for Houston Track & Field will now be sold on a single-game, general admission basis while supplies last. Fans are encouraged to act quickly and purchase advanced single-game tickets prior to their arrival on campus due to limited availability.
All facilities and related spring sporting events will operate at 25 percent capacity of available seating throughout the remainder of the 2021 season.
