Cougars celebrate Senior Day with pair of sweeps over Panthers

HOUSTON – The Houston tennis team finished Friday all smiles as it celebrated Senior Day and swept a doubleheader over Prairie View A&M at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.

This is the second straight doubleheader sweep for Houston (14-5, 3-1 AAC) after defeating UTRGV twice on March 29. With Friday's victories over Prairie View (8-18, 6-1 SWAC) the Cougars have now won four of their last five matches and seven of their last nine. Now with 14 victories on the season, the Cougars tie the 2018-19 squad that finished that season 14-7.

No Cougar lost on Friday in singles action with the only dropped opportunity coming as the top top Panthers duo won in the morning match. Laura Slisane, Phonexay Chitdara, and Stephanie Belovukovic all earned two singles victories on the day.

The two victories for Belovukovic are her first this season not coming via default. Additionally, New Jersey native Manasi Reddy made her first dual start of the season and had nearly beaten her opponent before the Cougars clinched victory.

While the morning matches were played out fully, the afternoon cap saw three matches end early with Cougars leading in all of them. In order to expedite the final match of the morning, the two team's agreed the final set on court one would be played to 10 points.

In between the two contests, the program took the time to honor and celebrate two graduating seniors: Mimi Kendall-Woseley and Phonexay Chitdara. Both transferring into the program in 2019, they have been incredible leaders and teammates during their time in Houston. Kendall-Woseley graduates with a degree in Technical leadership and Innovation management while Chitdara will earn a degree in Political Science and a minor in Retailing and Consumer Science.

UP NEXT

Houston returns to its home courts again on Sunday as it closes out American Athletic Conference action with a meeting against SMU. The program will then travel to Lamar for one final road contest before closing out the season on April 17 against Rice.
