Cougars to play in NCAA postseason for sixth straight season
HOUSTON – For the sixth straight season, the University of Houston Women's Golf program will compete in the NCAA postseason when it tees off in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.
The Cougars will play as the No. 8 seed at University Golf Club in Baton Rouge, La., on May 10-12. Houston will face No. 1 seed LSU, No. 2 seed Mississippi, No. 3 seed Baylor, No. 4 seed Oregon, No. 5 seed Maryland, No. 6 seed Alabama, No. 7 seed Oregon State, No. 9 seed Miami (Fla.), No. 10 seed North Texas, No. 11 seed Purdue, No. 12 seed, Mississippi State, No. 13 seed Tulsa, No. 14 seed Sam Houston State, No. 15 seed Kennesaw State, No. 16 seed East Tennessee State, No. 17 seed Jacksonville State and No. 18 seed Quinnipiac.
The low six teams and the low three individuals not from those teams from each of the four NCAA Regionals advance to the NCAA Championships, set for May 21-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
In addition to the Baton Rouge Regional, the NCAA postseason will be held at: Scarlet Course – OSU Golf Club (Columbus, Ohio, Ohio State); University of Louisville Golf Club (Louisville, Ky., Louisville) and Stanford Golf Course (Stanford, Calif., Stanford).
Eighteen teams and six student-athletes not on those teams will compete at each Regional.
The Cougars learned their postseason destination inside the Dave Williams Facility at Golf Club of Houston during the NCAA Selection Show, which aired on GOLF Channel.
NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY
With Wednesday's announcement, Houston extended its streak of competing in the NCAA postseason The Cougars have never missed an NCAA Regional in which the team was eligible to compete dating back to 2015. The program began under Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell during the 2013-14 season with three student-athletes competing as individuals, per NCAA rules.
The No. 8 seed ties as the second-highest postseason seed for the Cougars in their young history. Houston was a No. 8 seed at the 2019 Auburn Regional and competed as the No. 7 seed at the 2018 NCAA Austin Regional.
The 2020 NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In its most recent NCAA postseason appearance, the Cougars finished 11th at the 2019 NCAA Auburn Regional. Leonie Harm and Maddy Rayner tied for 33rd at 222 to lead the Cougars.
Harm is the only Cougar to compete at the NCAA Championships, qualifying as an individual in 2018 and in 2016.
This will be the second time Houston competes at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional at University Club. In 2016, the Cougars finished seventh, while Harm tied for seventh after firing 69s in the First and Final Round to become the first Cougar to qualify for the NCAA Championships as an individual.

The Cougars stand at No. 24 in the latest Golfstat national rankings. Under Chadwell's leadership, Houston has posted four Top-Five team finishes in six team tournaments this season.
In their most recent action, the Cougars finished second at the American Athletic Conference Championships at Pinehurst No. 6 – Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C.. on April 18-20.
Sophomore Karen Fredgaard fired a Final-Round 67 to surge into third at 218 while freshman Zoe Slaughter finished seventh at 221 in her American Championships debut.
Standing at No. 6 in the latest Golfstat individual rankings, Fredgaard has established herself as one of the nation's premier amateur student-athletes. The Asserbo, Denmark, native leads the Cougars with a 70.27 scoring average and 12 rounds of par or better and was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year earlier this week.
Fredgaard has earned three Top-Five finishes and captured the first individual title of her collegiate career at the UCF Challenge on Jan. 31-Feb. 2.
Earlier this month, she finished third at the prestigious Augusta National Women's Amateur as only the second Cougar to compete in that elite event.
A true freshman from Houston's Memorial Senior High, Slaughter ranks second on the team with a 73.33 scoring average and nine rounds of par or better. She was recognized as The American's Freshman of the Year earlier this week, becoming the first Cougar to receive that honor.
Slaughter has enjoyed a pair of Top-10 individual finishes, including a season-best second-place showing at the MountainView Collegiate on March 19-21.
Slaughter and Normann were joined on the All-American Athletic Conference Team by freshmen Anne Normann and Delaney Martin.
Martin stands third on the team with a 73.50 scoring average and has posted a pair of Top-10 finishes this season, including a fifth-place showing at The Bruzzy in her most recent action.
Normann recorded back-to-back Top-10 finishes at the Clover Cup and MountainView Collegiate in March and recently tied for 17th at The American Championships.
