Houston Wins Two Titles on Final Day of Drake Relays

Houston edges out NC A&T for 4x100-meter relay crown
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program closed out the final day of action at the 111th Drake Relays with victories in the 100-meter hurdles and men's 4x100-meter relay.

Nicholas Alexander, Travis Collins, Edward Sumler IV and Shaun Maswanganyi secured the Cougars second relay win of the weekend, edging out North Carolina A&T in the 4x100-meter relay. The Cougars entered the meet as the NCAA leader in the event and narrowly defeated the Aggies with a time of 39.142.
Naomi Taylor provided a highlight for the women squad, finishing atop the standings in the 100-meter hurdles. A three-time American Athletic Conference Champion in the event, Taylor led from start to finish with a wind-aided time of 12.84 securing the third individual title for the Houston women.
UH did not disappoint in the sprints as Alexander and Dylan Brown each finish among the top-three in the men's 100-meter. Alexander clocked a time of 10.42 for second place, trailed by Brown in third-place at 10.44.
Mikaila Martin and Taylor Scaife anchored the Cougars in the field, each finishing among the top-five in the Hammer Throw. Martin secured a third-place finish with a toss of 64.21m (210-8) on her third trip to the ring, as Scaife finished fifth with a toss of 61.47m (201-8).
After recording the top time in the prelims of the 110-meter hurdles, DJ Akindele clocked a time of 14.03 to take third in the final.
Houston closed out the day with a pair of podium finishes in the 4x100-meter relay. Zarie Dumas, Payge Side, Iman Babineaux and Aliyah Taylor combined for a time of 3:40.09 for second-place on the women's side. Tyrell Valentine. Christian Hamberlin. Frederick Lewis and Jordan Booker closed out the event in third-place at 3:09.41.
Houston did not only compete in Des Moines, the program sent a group of student-athletes to the J. Fred Duckett Twilights where Imari Chatman and Erin Derrow clocked a pair of personal-best in the 400-meter hurdles. Chatman finished in third at 59.33, followed by Derrow in fourth-place at 59.44.
Houston returns to action next weekend at the Texas Invite from April 30 – May 1 at in Austin.
HOUSTON ATTENDANCE POLICY
Limited tickets for Houston Track & Field will now be sold on a single-game, general admission basis while supplies last. Fans are encouraged to act quickly and purchase advanced single-game tickets prior to their arrival on campus due to limited availability.
All facilities and related spring sporting events will operate at 25 percent capacity of available seating throughout the remainder of the 2021 season.
For fans wishing to attend any of these home events this spring, an exclusive pre-sale ticket offer will be made available to existing season ticket holders and donors prior to the general public on-sale which begins on Monday, March 15 at 9 a.m. CT.
