PINEHURST, N.C. – University of Houston sophomore Karen Fredgaard played a bogey-free Final Round on the way to a 67 to finish third at the American Athletic Conference Championships on Pinehurst No. 6 at Pinehurst Resort on Tuesday afternoon.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 292 – their low round for the tournament – to finish second with a three-day total of 891.
Tulsa captured the team championship with a score of 888. Following the Cougars, East Carolina (894), No. 31 UCF (897) and SMU (898) rounded out the Top-Five leaders.
Fredgaard, who stands at No. 6 in the latest Golfstat individual national rankings, started her day with back-to-back birdies on the 6,290-yard, par-72 course. After four straight pars, the Asserbo, Denmark, native drained her final birdie of the day on the 158-yard, par-3 seventh hole.
Fredgaard continued her round with seven straight pars before making eagle on the 495-yard, par-5 15th hole and capped the tournament with three straight pars to move up 15 places in the individual standings.
Making her American Championships debut, freshman Zoe Slaughter finished seventh with a score of 221. Freshman Anne Normann tied for 16th at 225, while junior Maria Jose Martinez tied for 25th at 230.
Senior Ariana Saenz tied for 33rd at 235.
East Carolina's Dorthea Forbrigd earned medalist honors with a score of 1-under 215. Tulsa's Lorena Tseng finished second at 216, while UCF's Tunrada Piddon, East Carolina's Julie Boysen Hillestad and USF's Melanie Green tied for fourth at 220.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
This marked the seventh straight season in which the Cougars competed at the American Athletic Conference Championships and the sixth consecutive year as a team.
This marked the third straight season in which finished among the Top-Two leaders at The American Championships. Houston has never finished below third at The American Championships.
In 2019, Houston successfully defended its title and set tournament records with 54-hole team score of 13-under 851, while Leonie Harm captured the individual crown at 8-under 208.
This was the first time the Cougars competed at Pinehurst #6 – Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina during The American Championships. The previous six tournaments were held at Hammock Beach Resort & Golf Club in Palm Coast, Fla.

Following the American Athletic Conference Championships, the Cougars will wait to learn their NCAA postseason fate.
The NCAA Women's Golf Selection Show will air on Wednesday, April 28, on the Golf Channel with the time for the Selection Show to be announced soon.
72 teams and 24 individuals not from those teams will be selected to compete at one of four NCAA Regional sites on May 10-12.
The 2021 NCAA Regionals will be held at University Club (Baton Rouge, La., LSU) Scarlet Course – OSU Golf Club (Columbus, Ohio, Ohio State); University of Louisville Golf Club (Louisville, Ky., Louisville) and Stanford Golf Course (Stanford, Calif., Stanford).
The low six teams and the low three individuals not from those teams from each NCAA Regional will compete at the NCAA Championships, set for May 21-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Houston is looking to compete in its sixth straight NCAA Regional. The Cougars have competed in NCAA Regionals every year in which it was eligible to compete as a team, starting with the 2014-15 season.
The 2020 NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
