Gasser recognized by College Baseball Foundation
HOUSTON – Houston junior Robert Gasser has been named to the College Baseball Foundation's 2021 Pitcher of the Year Award Watch List, the organization announced this week.
Â
Gasser is the lone representative from the American Athletic Conference on the 44-member list. The accolade, which serves as college baseball's version of the Cy Young Award, was created in 2009 and is given annually to the nation's top collegiate pitcher.
Â
Gasser ranks in the AAC top-three in a host of categories including second in ERA (2.19), hits allowed per nine innings (6.57) and strikeouts (63). The El Dorado Hills, California, native, who has struck out nine-plus batters in four of his last five starts, is also third in WHIP (1.07).
Â
The southpaw has tossed 5.0-plus innings in all eight starts while limiting opponents to a .167 (13-for-78) average with runners aboard. His 12 strikeouts across 7.2 scoreless innings against Wichita State on April 1 were the most for a Houston pitcher since 2018.
Â
Gasser is among nine representatives from Texas universities on the watch list. The award will be presented this summer at a date yet to be announced by the College Baseball Foundation.
