First Cougar to earn AVCA honor since 2015
HOUSTON – University of Houston Volleyball setter Annie Cooke was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Southeast Region Freshman of the Year, the AVCA announced Tuesday.
Cooke is the first Cougar to earn an AVCA accolade since Brookah Palmer was awarded Southeast All-Region Honorable Mention honors in 2015. On April 5, Cooke was also named the American Athletic Conference Setter and Freshman of the Year and was named to the All-Conference First Team as well.
The Woodlands, Texas, native wasted no time making a name for herself as one of the best setters in the nation, finishing the year averaging 10.77 assists per set, a mark that ranked 27th in the country this season. Cooke also finished her rookie campaign as one of only 21 setters in America to record more than 800 total assists.
In conference action, Cooke stepped up her play even higher, leading The American with 11.08 assists per set against league opponents, which included highlights of her setting new standards for the conference and Houston Volleyball program as a whole.
Cooke's freshman season saw her hand out a career-high 67 assists against SMU (Feb. 12), becoming the first Cougar to surpass the 60-assist plateau in a single match since Destiny Patterson on Sept. 26, 2014. A few weeks later, she then dished out 58 assists against Tulsa (March 5), which were the most assists this season by a player in the conference in a four-set match.
As a result of her pair of performances against Tulsa, on March 8, Cooke became the first setter to earn a conference Offensive Player of the Week honor since Aug. 28, 2017, after averaging 14.00 assists per frame in two wins over the Golden Hurricane. By the end of the season, Cooke tallied six double-doubles, which included the first 20-dig outing of her career on March 6.
