Nora Monie and Mikaila Martin leave their mark in College Station
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program showed no signs of weariness in its third straight weekend of outdoor track & field action, shattering two facility and program records at the Texas A&M Invitational.
Nora Monie got things started for Houston, taking first-place in the Discus throw and securing both the program record and E.B. Cushing Stadium facility record. With a toss of 56.60m (185-8) on her sixth attempt, Monie secured the ninth-best throw in the NCAA this season.
Sarah Howe propelled her herself to No. 4 on the all-time list at UH after securing a third-place finish in the pole vault and clearing 4.03m (13-2 ½).
Mikaila Martin continues to amaze, shattering the program record in the Hammer Throw for the fourth time this season as UH took first and second in the event. Martin secured a top finish with a toss of 66.71m (218-10), taking over the facility record at E.B. Cushing Stadium. Taylor Scaife collected a second-place finish with the third longest throw in UH history at 64.00m (210-0) on her first attempt.
Meredith Sorensen had a fantastic day on the track with a first-place finish in the 3000-meter Steeplechase. Sorensen clocked a time of 11:11.50 to win the event and was trailed by Madeline Castleberry in third-place at 11:25.13.
Triston Gibbons won the Shot Put on the men's side, using only three attempts. Gibbons secured the crown with a toss of 18.73m (61-5 ½)
The Cougar relays had a strong outing as the women took second in the 4x100-meter relay (44.52) and third in the 4x400-meter relay (3:40.22). The men finished second in the 4x400-meter at 3:08.71.
Houston will return to action on April 16-17 in Baton Rouge at the Boots Garland Invitational hosted by LSU.
