Lovelace among three AAC catchers on watch list
HOUSTON – Houston junior catcher Kyle Lovelace has been named to the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Watch List, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced Tuesday.
The list spotlights 69 catchers including three from the American Athletic Conference. The award, formerly known as the Johnny Bench Award, was created in 2000 to honor college baseball's top catcher in the NCAA Division I ranks.
Lovelace leads the AAC in caught stealing by with seven in 10 tries and owns four more than the next-closest competitor. The junior threw out four runners in the Texas series including a pair in Saturday's 3-2 victory.
The 2018 NCAA Chapel Hill Regional All-Tournament Team and 2018 Silver Glove Series honoree is in his third full season serving as the Cougars' everyday catcher. Lovelace, who co-led The American with four pickoffs in 2019, has caught 31 runners stealing for his career.
