First time since 2016 a team in The American has done so
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball team swept the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards, the league office announced Monday.
Â
Junior libero Torie Frederick was named The American Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman setter Annie Cooke earned The American Offensive Player of the Week honors. Houston is the first school to sweep the The American's weekly accolades since SMU accomplished the task on Oct. 24, 2016.
Â
The award marks the second of the season for Frederick and the first of Cooke's career. Cooke is the first setter in the league to win Offensive Player of the Week since Aug. 28, 2017. Cooke also becomes the fourth different Cougar this season to win a Conference Player of the Week award, the second time in as many years that has happened.
Â
Together, Frederick and Cooke helped lead the Cougars to an undefeated week on the road, taking down Tulsa twice to remain the only unbeaten team in the West Division in conference play with their 6-0 record.
Â
In Frederick's pair of performances against the Golden Hurricane, she collected back-to-back 20-dig outings, totaling 52 digs in route to a 6.50 per set average, which led the league. Her 32 digs in the first win over Tulsa not only marked a career-high but also tied for third-most in program history in four-set match. That 32-dig mark was also the most by a player in the conference in a four-set contest this season.
Â
For Cooke, the Woodlands, Texas, native commanded Houston's offense with consecutive 50-assist outings, averaging 14.00 helpers per set. She began the week handing out 58 assists, a mark that ranks sixth most in program history for a four-set match, then followed that with another 54 assists the next day. Both performances sit first and second for most assists this season by a player in the conference in a four-set match.
Â
Cooke also posted a career-high 20 digs in the second matchup with Tulsa, marking the third double-double of her career. She added a .312 hitting percentage on the week as well.
Â
Up next, Houston returns to its home venue inside the Fertitta Center where the Cougars will host Memphis March 12-13. Both matches will be aired on ESPN+ and can be seen here.
