Program Record Highlights Opening Day of Texas Relays

Martin, Sorensen crack the top-five in their events
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program made big strides on the opening day of action at the 93rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
Mikaila Martin got things going for the Cougars with a program record breaking performance in the Hammer Throw. Martin shattered the program record in the event with a toss of 63.16m (207-3) on her third throw of the day. Minutes later, Martin bested her program-best throw with a toss of 64.15m (210-5) to take fifth-place in the event. Martin now holds two of the best marks in the hammer throw in program history. Taylor Scaife the previous record holder in the event secured an eighth-place finish with a throw of 61.16m (200-8 on her second attempt of the day.
Cecilia Tamayo-Garza was the lone Cougar on the women's side in the 200-meter. She represented the Cougars by advancing to the final in the event with the fifth-fastest time of the day at 23.39.
On the men's side, Shaun Maswanganyi and Christian Hamberlin each won their heat to advance to the final of the 200-meter. Maswanganyi clocked the second-fastest time in the field at 20.66 and was trailed by Hamberlin in fourth-place at 20.91.
Meredith Sorensen had a career day on the track, earning a fifth-place finish in the 3000-meter Steeplechase. The senior notched a lifetime best 10:50.57 taking hold of the fifth fastest time in program history.
The Cougars will return to action in Austin tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. Meet action can be viewed via the Longhorn Network. Meet information, including results and heat sheets can be found HERE. Limited tickets for Houston Track & Field will now be sold on a single-game, general admission basis while supplies last. Fans are encouraged to act quickly and purchase advanced single-game tickets prior to their arrival on campus due to limited availability.
All facilities and related spring sporting events will operate at 25 percent capacity of available seating throughout the remainder of the 2021 season.
For fans wishing to attend any of these home events this spring, an exclusive pre-sale ticket offer will be made available to existing season ticket holders and donors prior to the general public on-sale which begins on Monday, March 15 at 9 a.m. CT.
