Houston Opens Outdoor Season on High Note

Cougars win 18 events after 685 day hiatus
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program returned to action at the Carl Lewis International Complex for the first time in 685 days, capping off action at the Houston Spring Break Invitational with multiple lifetime best and top-10 times in program history.
The Cougars had a stellar day of competition, winning 18 events.
The Cougars had a fantastic outing in the sprints as Cecilia Tamayo-Garza paced UH in the 200-meter with a personal-best in the 200-meter after clocking a time of 23.68 in the event. Camille Rutherford continues to have a fantastic freshman season, winning the 100-meter at 11.54. In a stacked field, Shaun Maswanganyi led the way, clocking a time of 10.18 in the 100-meter to win the event.
Over in the pit, the day was filled with lifetime best. Benjamin Okafor took second-place in the long jump with a leap of 7.52m (24-08.25), a personal-best. On the women's side Justice Henderson won the long jump with a leap of 6.09m (19-11.75), also a personal-best.
The Houston Throwers had a fantastic day, as Triston Gibbons won both the Shot Put and the Discus. Gibbons won the Shot Put with a toss of 17.47m (57-03.75) and the Discus with a mark of 55.64m (182-06). Nora Monie entered the meet with the second-best mark in program history in the Discus and bested that with a toss of 52.62m (172-07) which is still the second-best throw in UH history. Top-10 times continued to roll in as Nu'uausala Tuilefano won the Shot Put on the women's side with the third-best throw in UH history. She won the event with a throw of 15.69m (51-05-75).
Houston will return to action Saturday at the UTSA Invitational in San Antonio. Meet information and results links for the UTSA Invitational can be found by clicking HERE.
HOUSTON ATTENDANCE POLICY
Limited tickets for Houston Track & Field will now be sold on a single-game, general admission basis while supplies last. Fans are encouraged to act quickly and purchase advanced single-game tickets prior to their arrival on campus due to limited availability.
All facilities and related spring sporting events will operate at 25 percent capacity of available seating throughout the remainder of the 2021 season.
For fans wishing to attend any of these home events this spring, an exclusive pre-sale ticket offer will be made available to existing season ticket holders and donors prior to the general public on-sale which begins on Monday, March 15 at 9 a.m. CT.
Fans are encouraged to visit UHCougars.com/tickets to purchase available single-game tickets while supplies last.
